Default When do your Met s/e occur?

I take my 1500 mg of Met XR at night (around 8 pm) but most of my symptoms seem to occur around 6-7 pm.

I just started it...but figured I would get sick right after taking it, not before taking it?

(My s/e is a "sick stomach"...verrry sick, if you know what I mean) =-(

My s/e didn't start for a week after I started it, and happened within an hour of eating. This continued for over a year. Turns out it was my diet that was causing it. When I switched to IR diet to control my blood sugars, they went away literally overnight and I haven't had a problem since. Since then I read that diet can counter act the drug by spiking your sugars and cause the tummy issues.

Hope it helps!

My s/e start about one hour after I take my meds. My s/e can be any where from a little queasy feeling to nauseous want to vomit now feeling. I hope I adjust to the met soon because it is helping me with my PCOS symptoms.

christyz -- what was it that you did change from your diet? I am getting ready to start Met today. I have been on a strict diet for the past 2 months ... low carb, low fat. I want to make sure I'm not eating something that will make the s/e worse than they have to be.

Thanks!

I started the IR Diet, which basically kept my sugars/insulin level so I wasn't counter-acting the drug anymore. You balance the carbs you eat with fiber, protien and good fats to keep your insulin from spiking and dipping your sugars.

There is specific info on the diet here: IR Diet In A Nutshell

Hope it will help!

Hi MelodyGrace!

I also started Met. yesterday (Nov. 13). I took my first pill at about 6pm with dinner, then took today's with lunch about 1pm. So far so good.

How are you doing?

I am supposed to stay at 500mg for 2 weeks, then increase to 1000mg for 2 - 3 weeks, then go to 1500mg. I am on the "regular" pills since my co-pay is SO much less. I will go to the time-release if I have to, but wanted to try the "regular" first.

Boo, they also started me at 500 mg 1x's a day... and I will move up 1 dose every 2 weeks, just like you.
I feel soooo tired, bloated, and nauseated! I started on Friday and today is Wednesday.
I have the worst (TMI!) diahhrea at the end of the day.
I'm sooo nauseated that I'm worried about uping it in 2 weeks. I feel like just curling up and going to sleep - but I HAVE to work, you know?
Grrr.
I have been sucking on hard candy to help with the nausea - but the sugar is probably making this worse. I'm going to look into the IR diet. ...

feel free to email me - since we are starting at the same time - maybe we could be buddies?

Take care,
Molly

I actually just got started on it today -- the pharmacy was out of it and had to order it. I JUST took my 1st dose (750mg) at dinner. I am so nervous! After 2 weeks I will be going to 1500mg a day.

I have been on a super strict diet for the past 2 months preparing for the Met. No sugars other than from fruits. I am on a 'diabetic' diet even though I'm not diabetic. I hppe this helps with the Met....

Molly -- I know what you mean about having to go to work. I own my own business so I definitely can't call in. I am so nervous about it.

Hope you guys are doing better on it!!

You know, I have been on Met XR at 1000mg for 12 weeks, and I haven't had a single side effect. I take 500 mg in the morning usually with some lite yougurt and I take the other pill with my evening meal. I was convinced that the Met was ineffective and that nothing had changed until after nine weeks I got my first cycle since coming off the pill almost a year ago.

I would definitely recommend the XR version. I've had no problems and have made no dietary adjustments. (Though I plan to after the bar exam. I ordered the IR diet book yesterday.)

Football Widow -- good to know! Helps calm my nerves about it. I took my 1st does last night and all I feel is a bit bloated. Are you IR? I have heard that women who aren't IR or who are thin cysters don't have nearly the same s/e as others ... just what I have heard through experiences on these and other boards.

I guess time will tell if I have the s/e or not. I just hate having to wait ... feel like all I have been doing is waiting for so long!

Side effects are unrelated to IR or weight, but rather are more related to insulin production. That's why so many women who eat high carb have troubles with side effects..I sure did. The higher the circulating insulin the worse side effects can be, so if a person (IR or not) is constantly spiking insulin with their diet they are more likely to have trouble.

I had a rotten time because I didn't change my diet..I had side efects for over a year. When I did my s/e stopped literally overnight. So it's more diet/insulin based than anything else.

Hope it makes sense and much success with the drug!

Melody Grace - My Dr. didn't diagnose me as insulin resistant. He just said that PCOS is caused by a lack of sensitivity to insulin and that the met would increase that sensitivity. Whether or not that means that I am IR, I don't know, and at the time, I didn't know the right questions to ask. I have my next visit on the 29th and I plan to ask.

But, after reading all of the literature, I think that the IR diet sounds like a good plan, even if I'm "just not sensitive to insulin". Truth be told, I feel like my instances of gastric distress (to put it politely) have gone down since I started taking met. I was convinced I had IBS, but now I think my previous problems with gastric distress may have been related to PCOS.

One side effect that I had hoped to have was losing weight. That hasn't occured either. However, like I said I haven't changed my diet. I will probably have better success with that after my stress load decreases and I can focus on my diet. Sounds like you've already made those adjustments.

I've read on here a couple of other cysters who have had good experiences like mine with the XR version. Good Luck!!!

Football Widow -- I have instances with 'gastric distress' too -- not sure if it is the same as you ... I will put it not so politely ... gass and constipation .. lol there, I said it. Should the Met help that? I just had to ask! LOL Hope that wasn't TMI for anyone! I am just such the open book trying to figure things out here! lol

christz -- That totally makes sense. Thanks so much for the info -- I have been really cutting out the bad carbs. I think the only carbs I have in a day are Kashi cereal, veggies and fruit. I have totally cut out breads and pasta and other carbs ... but boy do I miss it......what I would do for cheese pizza and fried chicken wings and some fries! LOL
