I have had PCOS since my teen years, not diagnosed until I was in my 30's though. I am scared that my dd will develop it as well. My dd who is 3 months away from turning 9 is showing signs of puberty already! I want her to get treatment asap so she does not have to suffer through all of the junk that I did, and still do.
Should I get her checked now and should her pediatrician be the one to consult? Can I take her to an endocronolgist?
She has epilepsy and takes Keppra and Trileptal, which may be responsible for her early puberty.
I don't have an answer for this, but I'm glad you asked... Are early signs of puberty also a sign of PCOS? My niece is 9 and is also showing signs... When the topic came up & I mentioned just keeping an eye on it everyone jumped on me... (I'm not suprised as I was made to believe it was ok for me to be like I was, even though everyone else was "healthy"...)
My family thinks if you ignore problems & never say it out loud there not there or they resolve themself...
Hope you get some good answers & info!!
Jill

Thanks a lot for your reply. I have an appt. tomorrow with my doc, I'll ask her what she thinks. I am so lucky that I found a doctor who knows what PCOS is and how to treat it after years of others saying it is no problem unless you are TTC.
Jill, if you don't mind, post what your doctor says tomorrow. I have a 4 month old little girl and I am hoping for the best b/c I don't want her to have to go through what all I have, but if she does have it I would like to get her on Met early in life so maybe she can bypass the hight school drama of, how am I going to spend the night with this girl and still go through my morning hair removal process without her knowing...
:-( Good luck and thanks for posting this message!

Of course you should keep your eye our but also just because you have it doesn't mean your DD will get it. I am the only one in my family with PCOS and neither Mackenzie or Athena have shown any signs of it.
I think you got our names mixed up, but for sure Lorri post what ever you find out...
Harmony ~ I can only imagine how you feel about your little one... We aren't even PG yet & I already think about *if I have a girl* how can I catch this early if she has problems & how will I talk to her about it... Far off I know but it's still goes through my mind... I'll pray that your & the rest the little princessess' born to us cysters NEVER have to experience this mess...
Sincerely,
Jill

Thank you :-) I am the only one in my family that has PCOS so I am hoping I am just an odd ball and no one else will have to go through it...

when my daughter was 10, i asked her pediatrician about testing her for pcos...and i was actually surprised that he knew anything about it. he did some blood test and shared the results with an endo friend of his. according to him, her 'numbers' were in the normal range but i can tell you that she will have pcos. whether or not they were on the high side of normal, i don't know. she's 11 yrs old now and she has skin tags, she has AG on the back of her neck and armpits, a big buddha belly and she's on the chunky side.
my pediatrician told me that my best bet would be to wait until she hits puberty (gets her period) before we think about putting her on metformin. so that's our plan for now. if the pediatrician doesn't handle her the way i think he should (but i think he will) i will take her to my ob/gyn who diagnosed and treats me.
i also read somewhere that girls who were born to moms that had gestational diabetes have a higher chance of having pcos. my mom didn't have GD with me but i have pcos..most likely because of the family history (grandma and aunt had diabetes and aunt had infertility). and i did have GD with taylor as well as my son and the baby, shane. i didn't have GD with the oldest girl, but she shows some signs that could be pcos, like hair on her upper lip...but that could be because of genetics as her dad is dark haired and hairy too.

hmm makes me wonder.... when did all of you start 'developing'. I know I was very early at age 8 and even early with my period at just barely turned 12.... could be something to look into...

I don't remember exactly when I started 'developing' ... maybe 10 or a little less? I got my period at 11, and it was Never Right.

i was always a skinny kid and i can't remember having boobs until i was about in 8th grade and that's when i got my period, i was 12 going on 13. i never had normal periods and was always told that it was because i young and i'd get regular eventually. i never got regular but never had any pcos issues (besides few and far between periods) until i went on the pill when i was 19. i stayed on it til i was 21 and TTC and that's when all hell broke loose.
that's one thing i will make sure i tell my daughters...no birth control pills!!!!

I'm not exactly sure when I started developing, but I have pics of me in 4th grade with what look like pretty big boobs, and I know I wore a 36C in 6th grade, because I remember someone finding out and making fun of me. I got my period in 5th grade, and I was the 2nd in our class. My periods didn't start getting wacko until about freshman year of high school, which is also when the facial hair started being a real problem.

I started developing very early in life. I was one week shy of my 7th b~day when AF came for the first time!!! Yes I was still 6 yrs old. Was NEVER regular with it either. As for boob's I was about 7 when I started to wear a size 36 B bra! ( was VERY thin untill I was 7 My mom went from having a hard time finding things to fit EVERYTHING was too big or if they fit they were too short to EVERYTHING being too small or too long. Everything is the same now.
