Default When to start BCP?

Hi. I've never been on BCP before. I was wondering at what point in my cycle to start the pill? I've read conflicting info. Some places say to start the Sunday after your period. Other places say anytime? I'm a little confused.

I should mention taht I am taking them mostly to control my hormones. Not so much for birth control purposes. I do get my period every month.

Hi,

You can start it at any time in your cycle, provided you are not pregnant.

Sunday start is just to help you remember the exact day every month and not necessary.

You can wait for the first day of your period, or start today, it doesn't matter. Sometimes if you start on a day that isn't your period, you may experience some spotting, but it doesn't mean the pill isn't working.

I've taken the pill for nearly 10 years, so I'm used to this! lol!

I hope it helps you! x

The sunday start is suggested b/c most of the pills are labeled and always start with sunday. When I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen each pack would actually come with a sticker to adjust the first pill to whatever day you start so you can make sure you stay on track.

Ah yes, for tri-phasic pills it is handy to do the Sunday start.

I find it easy just to mark in my diary when I need to stop or start lol!

Please, do yourself a favour and give up the waiting! There's no point! Just start it today and you will be fine as long as you make sure you are not pregnant with a home preg test if this could be the case. I have started bcp while not on my period when I was in your position and been absolutely fine - it was advised by my doctor too. You can start at any time in your cycle and it is completely safe to do so.

Alternatively, you could ask (in fact your doc should have done this) to be given Provera to induce a bleed and shed your lining so things are healthier in there before starting your pill, but this isn't completely necessary. Don't delay getting your PCOS under control waiting for a period that may not come for months and months - there's no point! xx

I understand completely, you want to do it the "right" way, but these instructions are for women who don't have PCOS lol! Doctors never cease to amaze me...

Good luck with it, I hope bcp helps your symptoms!! xx

Well, firstly I must say I have never tried it - in fact my gynae refused it, saying I wasn't "overweight enough to benefit from it" and that he's not seen many good results with it. He also said that the side effects (toilet troubles) are really not worth it when you can potentially lose weight (slowly) more healthily rather than with medication, which, when you stop taking it, you will quite possibly go back to square one. That put things into perspective for me. I have lost a lot of weight since then all by myself (with a bit of help from Yasmin bcp perhaps). For me it is exercise. I don't need to be keeping fit like I'm in the army, but if I do nothing it really messes my metabolism up. So I aim to do at least an hour a day of brisk exercise and it has really helped since June last year.

I was originally asking about Metformin as I was sick of bcp, and had an IUD. But now I am glad I went on Yasmin as I also have endometriosis, so it's better this way.

I am not saying that people on Met don't see great results sometimes, but, personally for me, I couldn't stand the side effects, and feel much healthier doing the weight loss by myself.

From the perspective of using Met for encouraging ovulation, rather than suppressing it with bcp, my thoughts are (unless ttc), the more ovulation, the more chance of cysts, therefore giving my ovaries a break is better for me. Bcps have totally cleared my cysts, and for times that I have come off them for a few months here and there, I don't think any PCOS cysts developed (endo cysts yes!).

Sorry this is long, it's just complicated really lol!

Hope this helps xx

Hey, you're welcome.

I was the same. I had only heard good stuff about Met, but after my gynae and then several doctors told me otherwise, I researched it and read some nasty things re side effects. I have a crappy time as it is without making it worse lol!

Here on soulcysters there are met threads in the other meds section...

So funny that Met was mentioned in this thread (i'm glad) because I have been trying to get my doc to recommend something OTHER than bcp to regulate hormones but she has said no need. I know that a lot of docs dont have any other options to give BUT bcps but I figured from reading on here that it seems that even for skinny cysters (like me) Met would help regulate hormones better. I've always been scared to go on anything esp bcp because of the horror stories I've read, but at this point, I have exhausted all options. Met doesn't sound so pleasant either, btw. I'm just worried about messing up my hormones even more.
