I am on 500mg once a day and my doctor said to go up to 2 pills in about 3 more weeks. I have been on it for a week now. I can't imagine having to take it twice a day as it makes me so sick. I take immodium about 30 minutes before the met and take GasX after the met. I was living in the bathroom before I started the immodium. It helps but I still visit the bathroom more than I want to. I don't want to go thru that twice a day. Does anyone know if it's OK to take both pills at the same time at night?

I was told that with the regular Metformin you need to space it thru the day so it is in your system consistantly. I take mine at 9-3-9. Some of the girls on here have the extended release tablets, and those you can take all at one time and have less side effects.
Yes, unless you are on the XR version, you need to space them 12 hours apart. But I would not increase the dose until your body has gotten used to it. It may take another couple of weeks. No fun to be in the bathroom all the time, so take it easy and (this time) disregard what the doctor tells you.
Also, are you taking it with food and staying away from greasy stuff and possibly lettuce? That may help too initially.

Thanks for the responses. Originally, my doc had said to take 1 pill for 1 week and then up to two. She said that people always talk about side effects and how bad it is but I shouldn't have any problem. I react to most meds and didn't know what the possible side effects were until I came here. I was fine the first 2 days and then it hit me.
I told her yesterday how sick I am and she said to wait another 3 weeks to up the dose and that I can take it all at one time. I am on the regular met.
I don't really eat greasy foods but I do eat lettuce. I'm vegan so this is kind of rough for me. I bought the IR diet book and can't figure out how to make it vegan. Heck, even the vegetarian chili recipe in the book as beef boullion in it. (that's not vegetarian!)
I will go back on the Soy Zone in mid April when my life is a little calmer and hopefully that will help me lose weight and I can keep better track of what works with the Met and what doesn't.
