Default When to take metformin

I have been taking metformin before bed for the last year. I recently read here in a thread that someone said to always take it in the middle of a meal. When should I be taking it?

I seem to wake up with an upset stomach every morning, maybe this is the reason.

I take mine at 11am (about two hours post breakfast) and usually later at night before bed. I was taking it at breakfast and dinner, but I found that if I took it at 8-9am, by the time I managed to get home for dinnertime pill-taking, I was starving and nauseous. I imagined that maybe the empty stomach + met downswing was making me so unhappy. So now I keep: a) eating and b) met taking evenly spaced through the day, and it helped me out.

I've had the best luck taking met sandwiched in my food - halfway through each meal. Also, avoid simple carbs, sweet stuff, and fat in your meals with met. That might help. When I can't get a meal taking it with a tall glass of milk has helped me....

I'm too terrified to take it on an empty stomach.

Yes, never ever take it on an empty stomach! I haven't actually vomited but I was hunched over the toilet just wishing I could. It was just like being back to having the stomach flu. Not fun!

I am taking 1500mg and take 1000mg with breakfast and then 500mg with dinner. I take the pills after my meals. Not sure if this is the right way to do it or not but it seems to work well for me.

I take mine during the middle of dinner. My doctor said that I can take all of the pills at the same time, but is it better to space them throughout the day? I have not had any side effects, but I am only on 1000 mgs for now. I do not increase for another week.

I take mine during each meal. Do you eat that late at night right before you go to bed? I thought you were supposed to take it with food so that is how I take it.

I would suspect that you have an upset stomach because of the time you take it, but then again a lot of people have stomach problems anytime of the day they take it. Have you had any problems with hypoglycemia? I've taken my Met without eating a few times and each time by blood sugar dropped really low. Now I make sure I eat at least something with it.

I was given the tip to take it with yogurt to stop the mud-butt, and it WORKED. I take it with dinner or after dinner (with the yogurt).
