There is no real "test" for PCOS, as it is a group of symptoms, and not everyone will have every symptom. To be on the safe side though, maybe set up an appointment now with a paediatric endocrinologist for your daughter. It may take a while to get in. The doctor can run some bloodwork and check for imbalances in hormones, and other glands like the thyroid and adrenals. A secondary measure could be having a pelvic u/s done.
Twelve is still young enough I think, not to feel worried that her period hasn't started yet. I was 13 when mine started, and it was ok for a while. You should get her to start a calendar/journal for herself once her period starts, and write down how she feels physically/emotionally throughout her cycle. This will prove to be helpful for her in the future if pcos rears its ugly head.
Best Wishes!

I was wondering the same thing. My dd is almost 10 and she has gained some weight and is starting to develop. I am so scared that she is going to have Pcos. My gyn told me to keep an eye on her and if I start to see some of the signs we will test her.

You could start now, but I'm not sure how much they will find... I think for most of us the symptoms started after AF started since that's when most of the hormones start kicking into high gear...
Also remember that when she starts AF, it is common to be irregular for the first year and they don't ovulate for the first year either, this is for healthy and non-healthy (like us) women...
Just my 2 cents...
I'd just keep my eye on things for a bit before being tested, she's still young... If you're worried about weight just make sure she eats healthy and maintains a set weight...

Cool thanks, I think I will have her blood work done at least. For me it is the high testosterone level, diabetes, and excess weight and hair right now. Still, it makes me worry.

Just so everyone knows, you don't have to have AF to get your problems. I had no idea about anything untill I woke up one morning (age 13) in the worst pain of my life. It turned out to be a 7lb cyst that had torsioned. I never got AF untill after my surgery and recovery.
If you see something suspicious or are very concerned, get the blood work. No harm in a little blood draw, especially when compared to the peace of mind you may receive.

You know, thanks you are right. See, my problem is my testosterone is high. They could test for that and to see if she is insulin resistant.
Im calling now...

How did it go with your daughter and the doc? Please let us know.
My sister is 11 and I am trying to encourage my mum to take her to be tested - I am IR and have a family history of type 2 (on my dad's side). My sis was born with a kidney problem too, which means she wouldn't be able to take Metformin if she does develop (or already has) PCOS. She has always been on the bigger side in regards to weight - not really overweight, but certainly on the upper limit of a healthy weight. I am worried about what she eats, since my family of origin don't eat that well for IR / diabetes. I have tried to talk to my mum about diet... but can't see it making any difference to what my sis is eating. I suppose I just have to keep trying to talk to my mum about it... and hoping and praying PCOS doesn't come near my beautiful little sis - or not so little anymore! (Almost taller than me these days!!)
