Unhappy Where do I go?

In December 2006 I had a miscarriage at 5 weeks. Two weeks later I was officially diagnosed with PCOS. I was pretty sure I had it before, but that is when it was confirmed. There have been so many things that have been going on in my life. Since February I have had strep 6 times, my husband had surgery, I'm not pregnant again yet, financial issues, etc. Pretty much since I lost the baby I've felt so lethargic, no energy to do anything, I don't enjoy anything anymore, I'm not happy (but I'm not unhappy either, just numb), I have no interest in anything, no self-esteem at all, feel like a failure, etc. I KNOW that I am depressed. I was going to go see someone about this, and then I just saw this depression board on here. I hadn't realized that depression is a characteristic of PCOS.

My question is, who should I go see about this? My thinking is probably my OB or a fertility specialist because they will know about PCOS and the effects it can have on causing depression. What do you suggest? I'm just trying to figure out where to start. Thank you ladies.

depending on your insurance you may need to get a referral from your family doctor. but i would suggest, unless you are trying to get pregnant, that an endocrinologist would be a great place to start. (obgyn and fertility drs will specialize in the pregnancy/ uterus aspects of pcos.) but pcos is also an endocrine issue. (or even go to an RE reproductive endocrinologist) but you may not get an appt. with an RE unless you are diagnosed as being infertile.

You could also try going to see councelor or therapist. that way you can at least talk over your feelings with someone. no matter what you chose to do or where you go, make sure you are informed. Don't be afraid to go to the doctor armed with lots of knowledge about pcos and your symptoms. be sure when you leave the doctor you are satisfied. you are the consumer and your doctor is your partner in your health care. but ultimately the treatment and testing done are up to you.

there is a section in this msg board where you can get recommendations for doctors in your area. good luck.

Well, I called and made an appointment with an RE. It's not for a month, but they said if I get my paperwork in they will try to get me in sooner if they have a cancellation. I hope they can, I'm tired of being so depressed and tired of the effect it's having on my family too. Thanks for the help Marion.

during the time you are waiting for the appt. time to come around, if you are depressed and need to talk to someone be sure to reach out for help. whether it be someone on this board or professionally. you've gone through a tremendous loss. i think that anytime you suffer a loss, no matter how big or small ANYONE ELSE thinks it is... it leaves a mark on your soul. it is important to share your feelings and a professional may be able to give you some good coping skills. (You mentioned financial issues... a counselor should be available at your county public health department. I don't think you have to pay at public health. some counties have a mental health department.) not all of them are the greatest but they should be able to point you in the right direction. many insurance plans also cover a certain number of mental health visits per months with a councelor.

if you sink further into depression before your appt. please seek out help.
don't feel like you have to take on the world on your own.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a pretty good support system, now that I've admitted what's going on. I'm very fortunate that my husband is so supportive and understands I'm having a tough time and is always there to let me vent, talk, give me a hug, whatever. And, one of my best friends was just diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago also, so she definitely knows what I'm dealing with too. I'm hoping they can get me in sooner, but if not, I will definitely talk to someone. Thanks again.
