Default Who do I ask for medication?

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site and new to PCOS. I was just diagnosed in June. The doctor prescribed YAZ for me. I have not had any other testing done. Since I have started YAZ, my acne has gotten a lot worse. I have read that spironolactone can be prescribed to help this. My question is...did you all go to a dermatologist for acne medication or can my ob/gyn prescribe this?

Welcome! I've been on only 2 types of bc and none helped with my acne but i can say i've only been on spironolactone for 4-5 months and my face looks sooo much better! I still have some bumps on my forehead and might get a small whitehead during my a/f but nothing like I use to! Its really a miracle pill for me (i've tried everything!)! With the pill I use the Clinque acne system, which i think helps as well. I switched to all mineral makeup and use Clinque spf 15 almost makeup for sheer coverage which helps control my breakouts. Its great!
I didnt have to go to a gyno or a dermatologist to get spiro. Just my family's doctor, who didnt even know spiro could clear up hormonal acne, wrote me the scribe because I TOLD her i wanted to take it! What I've learned from PCOS and other women on this board is Be firm with your doctors.
If you dont have insurance I get my spiro at walmart--100mg is $35 for a month supply where I live.
Hope this helps you and good luck!=-)

I have been taking Desogen and it seems to help my skin and hair (I took yaz and the patch before and did not like either of those). However, in addition to the birth control, I started following The Natural Diet Solution for PCOS and Infertility by Dr. Nancy Dunn in June 2009 following my diagnosis. I do believe that the addition of the diet is making even more of a difference. No refined carbs, lots of fruits and veggies and lean meats and nuts. Min or no dairy. No caffeine and lots of water. I am also taking a multi-vitamin as well and have been a regular exerciser running 3-4 miles 5-6x/week and weight lifting 3-4x/week.

Thanks for your advice! My ob/gyn just switched me to Ortho tri cyclen..I will start that after my next cycle. I am really nervous because I usually get awful morning sickness with the tri dosing throughout the month. Splendidwedding-what kind of side effects do you experience with the spiro? Luv2run- I just started cutting dairy out of my diet and cutting back on the carbs...talk about cravings! I just want this acne to go away!

Side effects..not many. I pee about every hour when I'm not asleep but I do drink lots of h2o. When I first started taking spiro I took it with my met in the morning with my breakfast. That made me nauseated and tired. Now I take spiro in the afternoon with lunch and I havent had a problem since.
