Default Who else has had a cyst rupture?

I ruptured a cyst in February (the day after Valentine's day, of all days!). I was getting in the bathtub and all of the sudden I felt this horrible stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen. I was scared to death because even though I know I have cysts on that side, I was afraid it could also be appendicitis. I thought the pain might go away but it didn't and my mom ended up calling the paramedics for me.

I noticed at the hospital that as long as I lay perfectly still, it didn't hurt, but if I moved even a little or someone nudged the bed, it hurt, I guess because it made the free fluid move around.

I was wondering who else has had a rupture and what your experience was. I've heard of people passing out from a ruptured cyst before.

I also have some sex-related questions maybe someone could answer. My boyfriend blamed himself for me rupturing a cyst because we had some pretty heavy, uh, celebrations on Valentine's day, during which I had to stop because I was in pain. I don't think it was his fault (he certainly wasn't trying to hurt me) but I wondered if that could contribute? Also, is it normal to take like two months before you are able to have sex again after a rupture? The hospital check-out sheet said "do not have sex for 7 days" which led me to believe I should be able to after that, but it was April before I was able to have sex without any pain. This caused a rift between me and my boyfriend who wondered if I might be exaggerating because I just didn't want him. Is it supposed to take that long?

There isn't a lot of info out there about cyst ruptures. All the sites I read had little more than a paragraph and none mentioned anything about how long it should take to heal.

I've never experienced a ruptured cyst, but my Best friends sister did when we were younger. She was doubled over in pain. When the cyst ruptured, you could actually hear a pop. Weird huh?

Mine burst in 1994. I wasn't sexually active at the time so I can't help you with that part. They thought I had appendicitis too and made me stay in the hospital overnight. I was extremely painful, I had a fever and a high white blood cell count. After some pain killers and time (gotta love Demerol) I was feeling fine. I went on the pill soon after so I haven't had that problem again.

I've had several rupture over the years. I'm usually laid up for a few days when it happens. The last one, about 2 1/2 years ago, was the worst. I did pass out. I think my body went into shock--the pain was so intense and so constant that after several hours I just couldn't take it anymore. I felt like I needed to throw up, but thought I'd die if I did, and my skin got super hot and my vision tunnelled. Then my knees just buckled, and I was out for about 30 seconds. I woke up in DF's arms, with him slapping me across the face and screaming into the phone to send an ambulance. Lots of fun!

That last one WAS triggered by sex. DF and I had sex early in the evening and there was some discomfort during and afterwards, and that discomfort slowly evolved into excruciating pain. I don't remember how long we waited to have sex again, but I think I was given the same instructions as you--wait 7 days. Poor DF was fine with that--he thought he'd broken me, and wasn't too eager to do it again!! :p The doctors at the hospital explained to him that even though the sex did trigger it, it wasn't his fault. It was about to rupture anyway.

I actually now ALWAYS feel some discomfort during sex. We just have to go really, really slow at first. Once the muscles loosen up it's better, but I do have a cyst on my left side so I've wondered if that's causing the pain. But to answer your question, once the cyst is ruptured and gone, I don't see how it could cause any more pain during intercourse. I'm not sure why you had to wait two months. Mine take ony about 5 to 7 days for the pain to go away completely.

I got on the pill shortly after that incident (and was also diagnosed with PCOS) and like Heather, I haven't had any rupture since.

Hey all -

I just now found this post and let me tell you.. now I'm worried. I had really horrible pain in my right abdomen back in Feb.... I almost passed out and I was doubled over... I ended up going to the ER and they told me I had a kidney stone... which eventually I passed and boy was that excruciating... my RE and OB told me that is more painful than childbirth... can you image??
anyway - I'm still having pain in my right side and occasionally in my left... my last RE appt I told him and he didn't say anything... I ask someone I knew and she said I could die from it???? Something about fluid or blood rushing to my chest??? Has anyone heard of this??? I'm thinking I need to make a new appt. with my RE and demand a new US or MRI. Whadda ya'll think???

She said you could die from a CYST? I've NEVER heard of that. With all the cysts I've had over the years, I'd think that at least one doctor would have mentioned that to me if it were true. I don't know who this person was, but I don't think she knows what she's talking about (or she didn't understand your question.) I can't see how fluid trapped in your uterus can get to your chest in the first place.

If you're having pain then definitely go see your doctor. If you DO have cysts, then you'll at least know what's happening if one ruptures. But I do NOT think you need to panic about anything. To my knowledge, the experience I had with my last ruptured cyst and the passing out is about as bad as it gets, and I was nowhere near death.

I had several burst through out the years and I now the pain of that. I also always have had pain during sex, first it was because there were always cysts( I have had way more than my share, I think) and now because of the hysterectomy. Just tell your guy to take it slow and if he cannot understand maybe give him some extra information about it. I am very blessed my DH is very understanding in that aspect.

The weird thing about it was that I've always had cysts, before I even met my BF I had them, but I've rarely had pain during intercourse (I can usually withstand him being VERY rough) up until my rupture. It finally got less painful, I was going to see the gyn if it didn't but it finally got where I could do it again. Maybe it was because we tried to do it IMMEDIATELY when the 7 days were up and we kept trying for a long time, so maybe I was re-irritating things or something before it had a chance to heal all the way. It's fine now - but I'd still like to know why it took so long, and I REALLY wish I'd known it could take that long to have sex normally. BF has a lot of medical knowledge and even he was beginning to wonder if something was wrong, he went between wondering if he "broke" me to wondering if I didn't want him and I was just faking the pain (he only seemed to think this when he wasn't in a good mood, he usually trusts me more than that). I think he understands now though.

The only thing I can think of, and this probably isn't the case, is that subconsciously your body was afraid of further injury in that area and was involuntarily clenching, thus making penetration impossible (or painful.) In another thread a rape victim was complaining of something similar--that she was so "tight" she couldn't even use tampons. I honestly think that was all in her head (although I totally understand how it got there,) and she was making herself "tight" without realizing it.

Just a theory...but the power of the mind over the body has never been fully understood....

What does it feel like when a cysts bursts. I have had some pain not bad just some irritable pinches just above my hip bones.. I have had ultrasounds done a regular and vaginal, the ultrasound tech told me she would have never thought I had pcos because I do not have any cysts at all.. I have all the symptoms though.. The pinching feeling was when I am about to have AF..? Any thoughts???????

I have had cysts rupture before and they're very painful. I have also had 4 kidney stones since the age of 19, and I'd much rather have a cyst rupture over that any day.

What they feel like is hard to describe, for me anyway. For me the pain is pretty steady and dull at first but increases in sharpness and intensity. It is pretty localized at first as well (one side or the other). I can't be too accurate on how long this pain lasts because I don't time it - I'm usually curled up in bed moaning. But I would say several minutes. And then I'm sore for 2-3 days after the fact, like someone had punched me in the stomach or something.

I think my left side is the worst side, because this pain happens mostly on that side more often then the right. I have seen the cysts on both ovaries (classic string of pearls - or in my case, Mardi Gras beads) on vaginal ultrasound. But I have never been to the doctor when a cyst ruptured. I've never blacked out (thank God) or had to be rushed to the ER (thank God again). Only time I've had to go to the ER it was because of a kidney stone.

Anyway, I don't know if that was helpful or confusing... Again sorry to ramble.... I tend to do that.

I had one rupture about 6 years ago and was in the ER with the pain - I got stabbing pain, nausea, chills, cold sweat. . . It was horrible. Although I've not been diagnosed with PCOS, the ER doc said it was a ruptured cyst and sent me home with Vicodin. I was sore for a day or two, but was not sexually active at that point, so I don't know about pain during intercourse. I recently had a bladder stone, which was infintely more painful than the cyst or childbirth.

As far as your situation - I've noticed that most of us have different experiences even though the diagnosis is about the same ('cept me and I can't claim PCOS). If you're concerned, talk to your doctor.

Hope you're feeling better.

Mine happened in the middle of TJMAXX of all places! I was Christmas shopping and had been in there for about 3hrs. When it happened, I was on my way to the check out and had to finally lean up on one of those tables where they put Men's shirts. All the color drained from my whole body and I thought I was going down for the count! I stayed on that table for what seemed a thousand minutes, but finally made my way up to the check out....after being in there all that time, I was NOT going to give up my purchases (now, that's a dedicated woman!). On my way to the car, I had to stop several times and literally lay on my cart...one Woman asked if she could help me but I made it to the car and sat there for a little while and then went on home. I made it into the house and just fell into a chair and had to lay there.
Haven't had one since, and after that, I never want another one!

I've had at least 2 cysts one which happened 2 years ago-thought I had appendex go kaboom, but it was only a cyst which helped me get my pcos dx. The second happend yesterday durring a grad ceremony. Since then I have been getting what I like to refer to as after shocks. When a cyst goes it feels like a foot long tack being stabbed into my side with a 50 lb sledge hammer.
I don't know about the sex thing but I will ask my gyno on tuesday about it....
