Who the heck ever thought up the layout of the bookstore had no clue!
Why on earth would they put adoption books (for adopting parents) next to how to talk to your teen about sex! There were no books for birth mothers there so why would they put adoption books there... First, it made me feel bad b/c it was back in the pg/childbirth section...second, I felt like an idiot b/c here I was standing in the sexuality section & I look pretty young as it is! All these ppl were staring @ me that were back there w/ their kids like I was a complete freak Secondly, there was only 1/4 a shelf there on adoption & there were no chinese adoption books at all! They did say they could order any books we wanted to look at but we didn't have to buy them if they ordered them...guess I was just aggrivated that even in todays society it seems like adoption is an unspoken word
Guess I just needed to vent a little!

Maybe amazon.com or bn.com is a good solution - no store layouts or plan-o-grams to deal with and you can read reviews that other buyers/readers have posted before spending your money.
Good luck!

Nope, I was @ Barnes & Noble...now that I know that I won't try going to Borders either!
It's not that I was completely upset, it's just stupid that they set it up that way! And books written by families that have adopted from China are no where to be found in the store but they should be in this very small section about China...oh well, I'm just going to order all my books online from now on!

Hi Traci! I can tell yu, my DH won't allow me to go looking in bookstores anymore for adoption books. I was SO infuriated after going into 3 different bookstores and finding a TOTAL of about 15 books (I am being generous) on adoption. I know that it isn't considered "traditional", but there were about 25-50 books on preg/childbirth in EACH store! ARGH!!!! Sorry, this is an issue that I have been dealing with lately as well. Fortunately Amazon has TONS. I just had 3 that were delivered to my home today. Now I just have to do my homework so that I can read them!!!

Krystal -- I understand that completely! Our agency has 3 books that are "required readings" and an extensive list of suggested readings. Today I recieved "Dear Birthmother", "The Open Adoption Experience", and "Raising Adopted Children". That was the required list, when I finish with those I will be moving on to the suggested list.

Krystal - I have the same exact problem...I think our agency has a suggested reading as well so I think I'm going to check that out to see what they have & just go ahead & order them...
I did get a fabulous book @ the bookstore though that you might be interested in! It's called "Adopting In America How to Adopt Within One Year" By: Randall B. Hicks. On the front cover there is a comment by Sondra Newburger, Editor of Adoptnet Magazine: "One of America's leading adoption attorneys reveals his secrets of success. A must read!" We did decide to go w/ international but it's still a good read b/c it does have some international adoption issues in it as well

i didnt find many books in the stores either, but i dont think it is anything personal. At least i dont see it that way. Yes it is a sign of our societies unsensitivity, but i cant honestly say, that i didnt know HOW to be sensitive before i became personaly touched by adoption.
i found all i wanted at amazon. good luck with the reading!!!

KAnde - I'm originally from Brookfield too! Well, technically Riverside, but that's just next door. My dad went to R-B High School, and my mom's first teaching job was at R-B. My parents moved to St Louis when I was fairly young, but we continued to visit my grandma in Riverside. It was my "second home."
