Hi, this is my first post. It looks like there are mostly younger people on here (is it because the older ones have died or something? I worry!)
I am 47 and have PCOS but am not on any meds yet. My body is pretty stressed out. I will be getting an endo soon but I have so many problems taking meds I dread starting Metformin but I know I have to try.
I have had this for many years. I get very depressed reading message boards and web sites because it seems this disease is so bad and few treatments exist. Each year I check in to see if anything new has been discovered and nothing has. I saw a tv show the other day suggesting the cortisol connection/Cushings and that you need to rule out small tumors just to make sure these aren't causing the excess cortisol. But they didn't follow up with the person they found them in so I don't know if her weight gain slowed or stopped after they were removed. I take Bromocriptine to reduce my Prolactin to zero which is where I feel the best - mine was elevated in my early 20's and was linked to really bad PMS so I have been on it ever since and no more PMS (no more "M" anymore anyway though from the PCOS).
I just steadily gain weight over the years pretty much no matter what I do.
Anyways, just wondering if there is anyone my age or older.
There are several ladies on the Getting To Know You board who are over 40 One poll showed that most women on this board are 1970s babies, but we have some of almost every age group.
I'm 42, and yes there are definately over 40 ladies. I was also having a hard time finding any until recently, so I know how you feel. I'm in an infertility buddy group for ladies in their 30s/40s, and your welcome to come by or lurk anytime! http://www.soulcysters.net/any-40-ov...me-235648-new/
If metformin or rx doesn't work out (and do give it a try - it really worked well for me, except for the s/e), do give the alternative forum a look, as there are many other things that can work.
Best of luck & welcome!!

I'm 47 and wasn't diagnosed with PCOS until I was 44. I've had symptoms since I was 12, but docs would always say my hormones were "normal." Finally a dermatologist said my acanthosis nigracans probably meant I was IR and I likely had PCOS. I'm on Met, Spiro, Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Meds. I've always been overweight except for a few years when I dieted and worked out like a mad woman. The year before I was diagnosed I gained 30 pounds on my already overweight body, and I lost it when I started Met. My biggest challenge is exercise. If I could find a low impact exercise that I could fit into my life, I would be much better off!

No, you don't 'have' to. Plenty of women here (like me) who never went on it, and have done just fine.
Once your labs come back, sit down and have a talk with your endo about what your short and long term goals are, and what you're willing/able to do on your own (in terms of lifestyle changes). This will help to determine which meds to take...
BTW, re: age
There are plenty of cysters here from all age ranges...

I am 51 and one of the oldest here. Let me tell you, you will love it here. I have never found a more positive and encouraging place for information and guidance in this PCOS journey.
Like Kat, I have never been on Met, although I personally know those who are on it and find it helpful. The amount of side effects seems to vary with each individual.
The best thing that has helped me is exercise, not only in dealing with PCOS, but in dealing with this stage in my life. Menopause hasn't been too bad, really, as long as I keep active. I know what you mean about the weight gaining thing, though. I seem to have to exercise twice as much just to maintain my current weight.
Thank you so much for posting and introducing yourself and I am looking forward to getting to know you better.
