I have been hearing a lot about Metformin. My doctor has never suggested that to me. Can an OBGYN prescribe the medicine to you or does it have to be an endocrinologist?

An OB, an endo, or a family doctor can prescribe it.

It can be any of the three just as Stacie pointed out, however I did find that my PCP was reluctant to prescribe it to me on the same dose that my reproductive endocrinologist does (which is twice what my PCP prescribed). My PCP just did not feel comfortable prescribing Metformin 1000 mg twice a day, which is the recommended dose for PCOS patients.

TTC #1- 04/2009
05/01/2009- Started on Metformin 500 mg b.i.d. and Prenatal vitamin.
05/19/2009- Initial RE visit. Increased Metformin to 1000 mg b.i.d. All labs normal except Rubella was non-immune.
06/02/2009-Got my MMR shot (AGAIN!). Started BCP due to not being able to conceive for 1 month (*sigh* another setback).

my general practitioner prescribed it to me, but I'm only at 1,000 mg and I had to ask several times until she actually did. I'm sooo glad I did.
