Default Who Prescribes What?

Hi Cysters TGIF!

I have a few questions--

Which dr prescribes your anti androgens for those of you who use them? I just opened up a sub bank account in which I *hope* to start saving for lazer treatments as a b-day present to myself because I can not continue on like this AND remain sane *lol* The reason I'm asking which dr is because I went thro such a hassle trying to get a script for Met...Gyno said it was beyond her scope, PCP said he didn't feel comfortable prescribing it b/c I'm not diabetic so he referred me to an Endo...I want to skip all the running around and get right to it

I have about 5 more months before my bday and since I'm going to be spending a lot on hair removal I want it to be effective hence me considering anti androgens...

Oh yeah I was put on Spiro during my teenage years and didnt notice a difference at all--was on it for like a year--Should I just skip it and ask for flutamide? Also--what dr. prescribes Vaniqua and can you use it with Lazer treatments?

TIA

Tah

My met was prescribed by my endocrinologist.

You may want to ask your endo if laser would be worth it at this point. I and many others spent thousands on laser with no results because our hormones were still messed up and new hair was growing in so fast that it had no affect

I'm prescribed spiro by my reproductive endo. I take 100mg once a day, and have had good results over the past 5 months. My growth is much lighter, finer, and slower to grow in. I also take bcp as a means to balance my estrogen to testosterone levels. What was your spiro dosage while you were on it? I noticed a lot of ladies are started on a small dose (like 25 or 50mg's per day), and it doesn't do anything for them in smaller amounts.
Just about any dr. will prescribe vaniqua. It's been prescribed to me by a GP and a dermatologist. It's not so good for me though. It makes my face red and itchy, and I'm terrible about remembering to put it on all the time. I'm always going in such a hurry.
I'm not on Met, yet anyway. The RE wants to re-check my sugar/insulin next month, and I'll probably be going on it. I'm not diabetic either. The RE calls it glucose intolerance. I'm very sensitive to sugar and simple carbs, and have levels that are high, but not diabetic level. I've maintained it so far by a low-carb diet since last April, but I may need a little help from the met.

I believe I was on 25mg of spiro but that was like hmmm 12 years ago? I just go to a reg Endo as I am not ttc...Maybe I'll ask about a higher dosage of spiro at my next appt. I will ask my PCP about the Vaniqua--I have sensitive skin so I am kinda worried about a reaction but at this point if it can minimize the hair growth I'll take an itchy face over a hairy one anyday *lol* My sugar levels are always within the normal range, the highest its been that I know of was 112 and that was one hour after eating McDonalds...But my insulin levels are high which is why he put me on Met

Just an FYI, you don't have to be TTC to see a Reproductive endo. They are focused on hormones that effect the reproductive organs, and PCOS falls under that. You can't take spiro while TTC, it can cause birth defects in male babies. Most ladies take it with BCP.

Wow you learn something knew everday--Didn't know I could see a RE if I wasn't TTC...Hmmm maybe I will switch to one...My Endo is ok I guess...He knows a lil about PCOS but I'd feel much more comfortable with someone who knows a lot about it....Is it just Spiro that causes defects? Does flutamide? I wont be TTC until next year, just wanted to know...

Thanks

I actually was referred to a study for PCOS women by my OBGYN. I saw him initially and it cost too much money to be in the study. However, the study doctor prescribed a few months of Flutamide and Metformin. Then after, it was working so well that my Endocrinologist decided he would continue me on the meds.
Hope this helps!
