Question Who's had a Glucose test?

My new OBGYN has ordered a Glucose test for me and then wants me to see a new Endo...If you've had this test, what is involved? I know you have to drink something, but other than that I don't know what to expect!

What happens is you test first while fasting, then you drink a glass of this super sweet sticky stuff, then you test again. How much your insulin spikes is measured between the two tests. A high response means you may be insulin resistant and your body is overcompensating.

The previous poster is correct. Some glucose tests only involve that much, the 2 that I did were 5 hour glucose test & it involved what was said above except the continued to check it every hour for 5 hours. I had this when I was 10 and then again in high school. My diagnosis was hypoglycemia, I'm not insulin resistant. The test isn't so bad. After I did it when I was 10 I couldn't drink orange soda for years...the stuff I had to drink was like the sweeeeetest orange drink ever, ugh!

Good luck with your test!! It's really not so bad, I'm a huge chicken with needles and I survived it twice!

I had a blood draw for fasting glucose, then I drank the nasty stuff, had a blood draw 1 hour later, and then again 1 hour after that. They took THIRTEEN vials of blood from me that day on an empty stomach for my CD 4 workup! The drink is gross... It's like orange soda without carbonation. I really had to grit my teeth to get it down. But it's over quick. If you're only doing that one test, it won't be so bad. I don't know how I didn't pass out due to how much blood they took for other things.

Yep, you drink the icky stuff (I've learned to like the orange stuff a little too much) and they take blood at intervals to see where your blood sugar is at...

It's not that big of a deal. I had a 2-hour one. The draw your blood after fasting, you drink orange stuff (not bad at all... I heard the red stuff is really bad though), and then you get your blood drawn at certain intervals.

Oh yeah, it's not bad. The drink is really sickly sweet, as everyone said. And then they draw your blood at however many intervals your test is for (Mine was a two hour, so I had one drawn before I drank the stuff, and then at one hour, and again at two hour) My biggest problem was that it was extremely early in the morning, and I was soooo sleepy. It was sooo boring in there, and I was so tired. The lady drawing my blood offered to let me lay down on the while I waited, but I declined lol.

My drink was cola flavored! Just try to drink it as quickly as possible. I would have loved to lie down! I sat in the waiting room reading. I asked if I could leave to do an errand, but the tech said that too much moving around can affect the results.

Something I haven't seen listed is I do believe 16 jelly beans have the same amount of sugar as the glucose. I know a lady here at work, her mom is a mid-wife. That's what they give to their patients to do the Gestational Diabetes glucose test! It might be worth asking about!!

Try the lemon lime flavor if they have it...I just did it for my gestational diabetes test and it tasted like sprite. It wasn't too bad tasting, it's just hard to get it down in 5 min.
Good luck!

I've had them while pregnant with our daughter, I had GD.

I just had one almost a year ago, I think, via my GP and it was a 4 hour GTT. Which means by the time I left it was close to 4 1/2 hours. You have fasting drawn, then wait for them to come in with a glucose drink OR tell you the # was too high to continue (which wouldn't be the best thing) and if you drink it, you wait an hour, test, wait an hour, test......for however long the GTT is for. If it's only an hour long, then you have fasting blood drawn, drink the glucose drink, wait an hour and they draw again and you leave.

It's easy.............just BORING!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Guys! Good to know that it's not that bad! I just get really queasy when they have to draw blood on me...It's a mental thing I guess. But I better get used to it if I'm gonna have a baby one day right!

It doesn't bother me too much to have my blood drawn but I always have to look the opposite direction. It seems to help. I just can't watch it being drawn.

I had a 2-hr one done a couple times. It wasn't too bad, just *boring* is right - waiting, waiting.. also, I was told the test is cancelled if you throw up or pass out... I did neither luckily.
