Hi Ladies,
Just wondering if anyone is on Metformin who isnt TTC. What Dose you are on and why you are taking it and what your Dr thinks about you being on it.
Cheers,
Kerri

I'm on Met and not currently TTC. I finally got tired of having to be on BCPs to get AF, mostly because I knew that was not fixing my body, and also because I just don't like having all those BCP hormones in my body.
So I went to my OBGYN and asked for Gluc, even though I wasn't TTC - he said I am only his second patient to be on Gluc without TTC, but agreed to let me try it.
As you can see from my subject line, DH and I lost an angel baby this May. The Gluc apparently worked, because we got pregnant without knowing and didn't find out until 10 weeks into the pregnancy, although we lost the baby shortly after finding out.
We thought about TTC immediately afterward, but we're both only 20 and still finishing up with school. I have one more year of undergrad and plan to get my master's (which takes two more years). We've agreed that I should wait to get pregnant until 6 months before I will finish school, so we'll be trying again in December of 2004.
It sounds like a far time away, but we'll still be very young and will both be finished with school and prepared to buy a house and all of those other things that come along with having a baby.
So I'm trying to be strong.
Oh, my doctor thinks it's good, since it's done several positive things for my body (a bit of weight loss, some natural cycles returning). I found out shortly after starting it that I'm also Type II diabetic, however, so stopping the medicine isn't really an option. I'm going to an endo in November and will likely have another medicine added to the Gluc. It's possible that when I TTC I'll have to go on insulin, because other diabetes drugs aren't considered safe when TTC...but that's a road I'll cross when I get there.
Anyway, that's probably more information than you needed or wanted! If you have any more questions, let me know.
I'm on gluc. and definitely not TTC - I had my tubes tied 8 years ago. My endo gave me gluc. without any hesitation because that currently seems to be the number one drug in fighting the PCOS battle.
I go back next month for my check up - but last time I went (in July) she agreed that it seemed to be working. I haven't lost any weight - but lots of other symptoms have either lessened or disappeared. Even if I don't lose any weight with gluc. I love this stuff.
My dandruff is gone, my acne is almost gone, my face/hair isn't half as oily, my body skin isn't half as dry, my nails are strong and growing - not weak and breaking, I'm not running to pee every hour on the hour - I can actually sleep all night without getting up, the hair on my belly grows in slower and I have much more energy! Oh yeah - my periods are on time and not nearly as heavy, nor do they last as long - YAY!
I am also on met and not TTC. I just started...right now I take 500 mg. Gluco XR a day, working my way up to 2000 mg. day. My endocrinologist says every woman with PCOS should be on met or similar drug, because of the health benefits. It aids in weight loss, helps regulate cycles, and most importantly, it greatly reduces the risk of developing Type II diabetes and other complications. Good luck!
I’m on Met and not TTC.
There should be a lot of us on Met that aren’t TTC because Met is not a fertility drug. It may help some get pregnant but that’s not really it’s purpose. I use it to lower my blood sugar and to delay the possible onset of Type II.
I am not TTC. MY endo gave me met in the hopes that it would help control the IR and get the other symptoms under control. She did warn me that if I was not using ahem "protection" that I could very well get pregnant. Let's hope that does not happen right now.
I'm on Gluc to get my period back, a real one, not the fake bleeding that comes with BCPs. Plus I've come to the conclusion that BCPs are what gave me the PCOS in the first place. I gained a steady 10 lbs. a year while on them (7 years) and when I quit, no AF. I'm not against using them completely, if I get my weight down, AF regularly visits, and we're still not ready to TTC I'd use them again but more carefully.
I tried for a full 6 months of nothing but diet and exercise to help bring back AF and when I didn't even lose a pound I asked for Gluc. I got AF within 20 days, my first one in a year, and my first REAL one in 8 (although I'm still waiting for #2, 70 days later)! Plus a whole host of other benefits came with the Gluc that I wasn't even suspecting. I had more energy, I slept through the night and quit having nightmares (which I later attributed to unstable insulin levels), I only got hungry 3 times a day instead of every hour.
Plus I know that TTC isn't that far away considering all of the problems us PCOSers have. I'm 24 now and I plan on starting to TTC at 29. For all I know it could take that long before I'm living a healthy life again. But for now, it's really far down on my to-do list.

Exactly- I am on it to- for IR- fertility is just a benefit of Metformin- not technically it's intended purpose.

I'm on Gluc and currently not TTC. Gluc was the first thing my Endo prescribed me and I can definately tell the difference. When I forget to take it I am so tired.
I am also on BCP, the Gluc isn't enough to give me AF, but I want to be on BCP anyways.

1000 Met ER, Prenatal Vitamins, stopped the BC with hopes of getting pregnant...
My endo put me on 1000 mg of GlucXR 2 months ago. 2 weeks ago I was upped to 2000 mg daily and still no sign of the old biddy AF! LOL....I think I am going thru the change of life a little early, but I do feel better. I have Diabetes Type II, PCOS, Syndrome X, hypothyroidism, constant ear and bladder infections and various other illnesses. I do feel better and have more energy but have learned the hard way about greasy/fatty foods. I have lost 7 lbs. since starting the GlucXR but I have an affinity for gummy bears and popsicles. The gummy bears are starting to make me sick now, thank God! My Endo, GP and Gyno have all suggested Gastric Bypass Surgery to me to get rid of my weight. I have my first appt. with a surgeon on Tuesday.

I'm also on Metformin, and not TTC. My endo has me on it to bring all my "levels" down that are too high right now (insulin, androgens, cholesterol, lipids, etc.). But diet and exercise are important parts of the treatment.

Was on 500 mg a day for 4-5 months and my gyn very recently increased dosage to 1000 mg a day. Am definitely feeling much better. Periods have become regular and have lost a few Pounds too - although my BMI was always within normal range.
Met is a PCOS medication ... it helps PCOS people whether or not they're ttc.

I'm also on met but not TTC. I am currently on 1000mg a day and seem to be gradually losing weight with diet and exercise as well. It has really curbed my appetite which is good, and I'm hoping it'll bring AF back as well. I hate the pill and don't want to be on it ever again. I plan on getting and IUD put in at my appointment in a couple weeks when she'll also check my progress with the PCOS meds and stuff.

I am on Glucophage XR 2000 mgs and not trying to conceive. My endo gave me the drug in hopes I could get the insulin response under control. I have no doubt that that was why i felt tired and miserable all of the time. I knew I felt fine until I ate but I couldn't figure out how eating made me feel so rotten. I ate very little because I didn't feel well but continued to have a weight gain that I knew was "abnormal". Why was I gaining weight and yet not eating? Although, I am on the "thinner" side of PCOS my endo said it would slow down diabetes and would help me feel better. I have been on the drug 22 months and feel like a different person. I have lost about 22 lbs also. See....I told you I wasn't eating! I eat healthy anyway! I would recommend trying this drug to anyone considering it. I have blessed by feeling normal again and amazed by the results.
