Default Whoa

I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 days ago, and have been taking 500mg of Met daily since, with the plan of working up to 1500 week by week. In two days I move up to 1000mg.

The only major problem I'm having is the worst gas and bloating of my entire life. Like WHOA. I mean, I'd read on here that its a side effect but I had no idea. I have minor cramps almost all of the time, and then an intense attack of cramps and bloating and then a #2-- this has happened around 4 times a DAY in the last four days. I feel like my intestines are shredding! I think I'd probably have diarrhea too if I wasn't eating a truck load of fiber in an attempt to bypass it.

On one hand, it seems to me that this is a sign that its working, and that's good. The rate that everything seems to be flying through my body, it seems certain that I'll lose weight on this drug. On the other hand, I'm afraid to start taking it at breakfast next week because I don't want to become "that girl" at the office. If 500 does this much to me I can't even imagine with 1500 will do.

So my question is this: if you experience terrible side effects on the smallest dose, are the effects EVEN WORSE as you work your way up, or are they just the same level of symptoms spread throughout the day more? If its the former, than I need to go buy some Charmin stock. And take a few weeks off.

Also-- if you've switched from regular Met to XR, do you notice these symptoms die down a bit, since its released more slowly into your system?

Are you on the extended release version of metformin? I'm on my 2nd week of the Met ER and have only had 2 days of "bad" symptoms, and that is only because I ate terribly those two days. Bumping up your meds could definitely intensify your symptoms..you should definitely talk with your doc and maybe ask for the ER instead!
