Unhappy Why caffeine's a no-no....

Here's a summary of a study done in the Netherlands (this applies to us because PCOS is caused by insulin problems):

CAFFEINE BLOCKS INSULIN

Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Most doctors feel that diabetics can drink coffee safely, but a recent report from the Netherlands shows that caffeine in coffee raises blood sugar levels.

Diabetics suffer blindness, deafness, heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, burning foot syndrome and many other serious side effects, and all are caused by a high-rise in blood sugar after meals. Anything that raises blood sugar levels too high increases cell damage in diabetics. This study shows that caffeine raises blood sugar levels by causing the body to put out large amounts of adrenalin that makes cells less responsive to insulin.

When caffeine was removed from the coffee, blood sugar levels did not rise higher than normal. On the basis of this study, diabetics should drink decaffeinated coffee, rather than one with caffeine, in addition to severely restricting sugar-added foods, bakery products, pastas, fruit juices and they should eat root vegetables and fruits only with meals.

Caffeine can decrease insulin sensitivity in humans. Diabetes Care, 2002, Vol 25, Iss 2, pp 364-369. GB Keijzers, BE DeGalan, CJ Tack, P Smits. Smits P, Univ Nijmegen, Med Ctr, Dept Pharmacol Toxicol 233, POB 9101, NL-6500 HB Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS

I also read once that caffeine "steals" your metabolism. Basically what happens is that your body uses it for energy instead of the food you eat. As it's addictive you body asks for more caffeine when it needs energy. The result is that your food goes to fat storage as long as there's a supply of caffeine.

You know for the last 2 weeks, I totally cut out coffee. I only did it because I am so desperate to have a baby and my thinking is that every bit helps. Anyway, I noticed a lot of changes in my overall health without coffee. I don't have that feeling in the morning, the one where I almost shake and can't start the day until I've had a cup. I no longer have coffee breath (ugh, coffee breath is awful!!) and my acne seems to be responding well to the lack of caffeine in my body. I don't even have regular tea anymore, only camomile. But, with all of my hormone irregularities, who knows if the skin improvement is from no longer drinking coffee or some weirdness occuring with my hormones

I am cutting back as well. I started having a few cups a morning last week and now I am down to 1/2 a cup of coffee with hot water... I have switched to licorice herbal tea, so yummy!

My trainer at the gym also town me that caffine overstimulates our adrenal glands.

Default No caffeine...

I stopped drinking caffeine when I read about the connection to insulin a few years ago. Now I only have it when I have a migraine (for some reason 1/2 a can of soda really helps).

Since I'm also low-carbing, now I drink Diet Rite cola most of the time (made with Splenda and yummy).

I only drink caff.-free diet coke these days and have also noticed that I feel so much better! The only time i have caffeine now is when i feel an asthma attack brewing - that will kick it out if I'm lucky. My dr. explained why this works, but I don't remember.

I rarely drink caffeine, and when I do it really has a big effect on me. With 2 glasses of tea at lunch (no sugar added) I am up till 3 am or later the next morning. My dr. said cutting caffeine is a good start to TTC.

Anyone remember NewsRadio? Dave said, "I'm not sure what's in caffeine, but I'm pretty sure that without it your head caves in."

You wanna know the best way to cut out caffiene...? do a total detox like i did, no suger, alcohol, dairy products, wheat etc for at least 2 weeks. I just had loads of water, fruit, vegetables, grilled meat and brown rice. It was heinous BUT now I never want coffee again..lol And ya just get so sh*@%y about not having lollies and cake that the caffiene thing is the least of your worrie

It works the same way when you cut out carbs. The first few weeks are awful, but then your body adjusts. Now when I have carbs (or caffeine), my body rebels!
