Default Why do Lab Ranges Vary?

I'm betting the Hypo experts can educate me on this one:
Why does the "scoring" system for lab work vary, depending on the lab? For example, some labs use 4 as the upper end of the TSH test, and some use 4.5, 5, or 5.5.

Do they use different tests, that are more/less sensitive? That's been my presumption....since if the test itself is the same, I can't imagine why the "normal" values would differ from lab to lab.

Am I on track here or just clueless?

Thanks!

Lab equipment can vary in testing so they post an average of what they test that proves to be asymptomatic (according to them). That's why lab ranges are not really to be relied on altogether... there could be freak numbers skewing the result.. etc... The AACE posts that TSH above 3 is suspect and people still post lab ranges up to 7 in some cases!
