Why do people do this? Angelina Jolie's adoption agent pleads guilt in visa fraud case
June 25, 2004
The adoption agent who assisted actress Angelina Jolie in adopting her son Maddox, a Cambodian orphan, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to visa fraud and money laundering. According to Reuters, Hawaiian resident Lawyn Galindo, 53, was charged as part of an adoption network that paid indigent women as little as $100 for their children.
According to documents, Galindo and her sister, Seattle resident Lynn Devin, reportedly received fees of $10,000 or more to arrange adoptions for US residents of children who were supposed to be orphaned, despite the fact that some still had parents. The two operated Seattle International Adoptions, pairing hundreds of Cambodian children with adoptive parents, until U.S. immigration representatives stepped in to halt the adoptions.
Galindo faces up to 20 years in prison. According to the report, prosecutors claim that there will be no changes in the status of children adopted through the agency.
*Things like this really pi** me off! How will this reflect on adoption? It's not like it's easy now to adopt, but things like this only make it harder!*
