Default Why do some hairs turn white?

Can anyone answer this. I have always had black or dark hairs on chin but they were not white. Now im going thru laser and i noticed that the white ones do not fall out. What is it that makes these hairs turn white or are they new ones? I am 43 now and I would say i bagan to notice these about 5-6 years ago.

Default Grey hair....

I assumed those "white" hairs were actually grey, from aging. I, too, have them and they don't respond to a regular laser. I have just had to tweeze them out.

I was in a trial of a new laser that is supposed to work on white hairs (it's radio frequency and it doesn't care about the colour of the hair, but rather the density of the hair (relative to flesh).). It seemed to work, but they didn't get them all.

I often wondered if it was like graying of the hair. I have plenty of that on top of my head. ( thank goodness for hair dye). Im waiting to hear of that laser you mention in this area. I remember my derm mentioning this over 10 yrs ago. He told me it was being researched. Maybe that will be the final thing for me. THe other laser seems to be working well on the dark hairs. It's weird that they haven't grown back yet and its been 2 1/2 weeks. I like it.

There is a hair removal treatment that uses sound waves in the UK called Epil Pro, I wonder if that's the same thing? In C.Harris' book on PCOS she says it has had the best response for women with hormonal hair growth out of all permanent hair removal methods which is encouraging. The only problem with it is that between treatments you're not allowed to pluck or shave just trim the hair, not very practical for facial hair!!!!

I'm hoping this isn't always the case and was just some funny salon!

Mathisk,

I was just wondering if you were able to ask the doctor if dying the blondish colored hairs would make them more receptive to the laser therapy.

Just to poke my nose in, I think it's the colour of the root of the hair that matters. Mine are all black, lucky old me - not!!!!

Hezzer, Im so sorry, i promised to get you an answer from the drs office and didn't I go and forget. I even have a note in my calendar to reply to you. I think the post above is correct about the root. I will see the RN next thursday and I promise to ask her the question. It's now something that I personally need to know because of my white hairs. Otherwise i think the laser is working on the dark ones but i only had one treatment so far. This thing with the radio waves is promising .

Default Epil Pro

I mentioned a system of hair removal earlier called Epil-Pro, here is a web page that mentions a bit about it, not much but notice it specifically mentions PCOS!
