Default Why haven't I EVER felt better?

I often read about women who are completely miserable until they are diagnosed and treated for their hypothyroidism. They feel like new - why haven't I ever had that moment?

I was diagnosed when I started ttc, I've been on medication I guess for around 7 years or so. I am currently on 100 mcg of levothyroxine. I feel in the last month or so I've gotten more tired, my voice has become more hoarse, etc.

I had my family doctor run my thyroid tests they are all back within "normal" although my tsh seems to have been going up over the last few tests.

Anyway, do you think I should be on a higher dose? A different medication? Shouldn't I feel some relief from being this tired all the time?

I think I'm overdue for a visit with my Endo.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Diamond, my advice is see your endo. as soon as you can. You sound like you really would like to be feeling good again. Family doctors don't always have the background to treat hypothyroidism in the optimal way, yet they may not admit this.
As an example, my mother is hypothyroid (we both are) and takes synthroid. She was having symptoms that could have been from thyroid levels dipping again, but her primary dr. told her, "All in normal range," and did not discuss further. Yet that dr. was using the old reference range for TSH and didn't seem concerned one bit. I urged mom to see an endo., and when she did the endo. agreed that the numbers were off and recommended a change in dosage.

In your situation, it also occurred to me that if you are taking generic tablets, sometimes the pharmacy will switch manufacturers and the effectiveness of the medication could be compromised in the new factory/process. This could alter your response to the levothyroxine tablets. In any case, visiting the endo. for new blood tests is a great start, and you can talk about making some small adjustments in medication. I myself started taking cytomel (t3) along with the other med. I had been taking for 5+ yrs. and it seems to help energy in morning.

Thank you so much for your reply.

As far as I can tell, the pill has never changed. But I am going to take your advice and call in tomorrow to be referred back to the Endo...

Thanks again!

Just a minor update - I have my actual TSH number, it is 3.28. My lab is using the older reference range (although I'm not sure if Canada is on board yet). I've just read that some doctors 'investigate' anything over 2, but that anything over 3 is the norm to be treated these days. I have borderline hypothyroidism, and lately I'm feeling like it's full-blown.

Anyway, after some reading, I really feel like I am being under-treated. I'm going to see the family doc later today for a referral. I hope my Endo won't ignore my concern.

Yeah, you might need an increase in meds. Plus, it may help to switch to a small percentage of t3 to get that daily boost.

Go to http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com for further information on why levothyroxine alone is often not enough.

I was just about to suggest the same thing

I just ordered their book today and am going to be asking my doctor to put me on Armour tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Thank you so much ladies. I felt like a popscicle ALL DAY LONG today. I will check out the site and probably print things off to show my Endo. Something tells me that she is quite up-to-date with her knowledge though - but just in case!

Ugh....I called the Endo's office to see if they've received the referral yet (they haven't). The secretary asked what was going on, and I explained things and told her my tsh number, to which she replied "That is a perfectly normal number." AHHHHHHHHHHH I just want to scream. WHY hasn't Canada gotten on board? At any rate, she figured the Endo wouldn't even see me if my labs were "normal." I asked, if it wasn't thyroid related, it is most certainly hormonal on some level - and she IS an Endocrinologist isn't she!? I guess I just have to wait and see what happens.

Have any of you experienced lower back pain as part of your muscle/joint aches? I have been in agony today with it, major spasms, my sciatic nerve is on fire. I can hardly move; sitting, standing - it's all the same. I am also having major pelvic/menstrual-like pain, but I just finished af on Sunday. I can tell it is radiating from my left. What on earth could be going on with me!

Yes, I would get back spasms and stuff all the time. You might want to make sure you are on good supplements. Calcium/Magnesium/Vit.d will go a long way towards helping your muscles & joints cope. Also, iron. If you get these symptoms after AF, you may want to supplement with some slowFe or something, too.

Shenacat, I also noticed this last af was unusually heavier and more painful then normal, and had some clotting. (I'm on the pill, a while ago they seemed to be getting lighter, I NEVER get clots while on the pill) Also, I have been having spotting throughout, despite af being over. TMI after my period was over, we had intercourse and it hurt like hell!

If I wasn't so fatigued I'd probably be more proactive about getting things figured out, but I just can't think straight. I'm nauseated over this, literally.

Fax them a copy of this:

Yes, it's an American organization, but they should still read it.

Thanks, I'll print it.

Something else happened today, I think related to my back pain. I had a bowel movement, with loads of red blood. I know I have hemrhoids, but I've never bled like this frm them. This exact same thing happened to me in August at the same time in my cycle (back pain, rectal bleeding, etc). I am scared.

I'm going to the Urgent Care when my husband comes home.

I have had more than my share of rectal bleeding, lots of red blood. Sometimes it has been so much I felt like I was going to bleed out completely. It usually coincided with a bad cycle. I think it was because I always had related alternating constipation/diarrhea when a bad cycle like that starts.

I never went to urgent care or anything and I had that bleeding as a symptom way back as a teenager and all the way into adulthood. I did once go to a gastro-intestinal doctor who did a colonoscopy and everything and she just found squat. Squat, squat, squat. She told me to take iron and go home.
