Default Why no sex for 3 weeks?

The papers my doctor gave me for "caring for yourself after a medical D&C with misoprosol" say not to have sex for 3 weeks.

Now I'm not a raging nympho or anything and if I have an excuse to get out of sex free, by all means I'm all for it... BUT

I am thinking of using OPKs once I know the HCG is out of my system and if I see an O coming my way, I just *might* take my chances. I'm not sure yet. I feel like this was a bad egg, nothing wrong with my body, not much physically to recover from since it never developed past a grape-sized sac and ended up being, essentially, a late period. Surely my uterus wasn't that put upon and my cervix couldn't have dilated much if at all...

So why no sex for 3 weeks?

I am thinking that is just to scare you into not trying that cycle? Has anyone else been told this?

I know there are people who ignore the "no sex for 6 weeks" after giving birth and show up at the first post partum appt. pregnant and they often turn out just fine...

eta - I know it's UNLIKELY that I will O this cycle... but even going into fertility treatments, I feel like if I do have an O, I don't want to waste it. It's not like I am one of those women with the luxury of saying "I will try again in 3 months." If I wait 3 months to ovulate, I may well end up waiting 3 years.

I'm not sure. I would think you were early enough that your uterus doesn't have a lot to recover from. Some women feel this is prime time to ttc again, because your hormones are more regular after pregnancy then any other time. I think Laurann would have more to say on this, I'm pretty sure she always got back to ttc quite early on.

So sorry for your loss. I think they tell you to wait for 3 weeks because they are afraid of infection. Your cervix may remain a little open after the D & C. I was also told this with all my D & C's.

I was told no sex for 4 weeks after my D&C because of the risk of infection. I'm so sorry for your loss hon.

I didn't actually have a D&C though... I took cytotec. I think they type out "medical D&C with misoprosol" because "medical abortion" would freak people out, even though I think that's technically what it really is.

I was told that as well (to wait 3 weeks). It because the risk of infection is high. Remember. that the baby was inplanted deeply in your uterus, the inside really needs time to heal. Also, Dr.s want you to wait for one cyle so that if you do get pg again they can properly date the pg. OK, now for the personal side, DH and I have NEVER waited the time that we are told to. We figured I wouldn't O anyway, and if I did and I got pregnant that was OK because that's what we wanted anyway. For us, we needed that closeness. Also, we wanted to try again right away.

i was told "vaginal rest" (so nothing inside and no bathes or hot tubs) for 2 weeks after my natural m/c. i pressed them on it and they said open cervix means risk of infection.

this sounds horrible (i'm sorry) but if your m/c went smoothly and the meds worked then you might need less recovery time. this is espeically true if you were earlier on in your pg. i would give yourself at least 7-10 days of "rest" but if it looks like you're O'ing two weeks out (or you just feel the need) go for it.

i am very sorry for your loss,

That doesn't sound horrible at all. It just sounds straightforward... which is how I am trying to look at this whole mess.

I really wonder if they will give me an answer on my cervix being open or not tomorrow?

i think they can look... but until your m/c is done they probably can't say....

i'm also not sure what actually "counts" as the m/c... passing the sac, starting to bleed, bleeding stopping.... i know it doesn't really matter, but it's one of those things that everyone talks about a m/c like it's a well-define (one-day) event.

my dh was surprised it dragged on so long... as was i, except since it was happening to me i was more unhappy about it...

i would ask about having your betas monitored post m/c, especially if they don't plan to u/s again. many places (mine included) did not plan to follow me on u/s... they did one a few days in but they preferred to use b/w to make sure everything had cleared.

good luck, and keep asking questions

I am facing the same dilemna at the moment and am worried about the risk of infection. I think I have just about come to the end of my natural miscarriage - blood turned to brown now. I have two doctors I see regularly. One told me to wait a month before ttc, the other (who is a recurrent miscarriage specialist) told me not to wait as you are so more fertile immediately after m/c. So I am not going to wait, but having said that I am not going to have sex unless I get a positive OPK - don't won't to risk infection without very good reason. In any case I don't suppose I will see O for a while yet. I'm also unsure what to call the end of my m/c, beginning of my cycle.

I was told to wait until the bleeding stopped then we could resume sex but to use protection for 6 weeks. My GYN said that you are most fertile after a miscarriage but that if you were to conceive straight after there is some evidence to suggest a higher chance of miscarriage (something to do with the lining not being thick enough or it being too thick I can't remember).
