I am so frustrated...I finally got a PCOS dx after 2 years...and when I finally got it...I'm on doc #3 and finally got someone to treat it. BUT he is lowballing the meds BIG TIME! Only 500 mg Metformin XR a day and only 25mg Spiro. WHY??????? Everything I read shows most PCOSers getting 1500 mg or more of the met and 100 and up of the spiro???? HELP!!!
What did your bloodwork look like? Sometimes docs like you on low doses to see how you react to them, some docs don't like to have you on too much meds if at all possible. If your bloodwork numbers are really wacky, take some research with you to the doctor and tell him what you want. Show him the research backs up what you want. Good luck!

When I started taking Spiro, I started at 25 mg. a day and slowing worked up to 50 mg twice a day which is what I am taking now. I also take Yasmin with it, which as a little spiro in it as well. I think Dr.s usually like you to start out slowly to give your body time to adjust to it. I would stick with what your dr. prescribed and ask him if your symptoms don't improve. Keep in mind that it takes up to 6 months before you see any major changes with the spiro.

Spiro is actually a blood pressure or diuretic medication. Therefore it can drop your blood pressure if you take too big of a dose starting off. He is probably going to work you up to a larger dose.
My doctor started me out slowly. I actually started with 50mg of spiro and stayed on that dosage for 6 months. The doctor then increased it to 100mg and I stayed on that dose for a year. My body functioned perfectly on the 50mg but was all messed up while on the 100mg...spotting between periods and extra, extra long cycles. Now that I am back on 50mg of the spiro, I am back to normal. I think everyone is different and it takes trial and error to determine what is best for you.
