I've been on met (500 2X/day) for about 3 weeks now...and let me just say UGH! I heard experiences on here, and expected some nausea, etc...And I guess in some ways I've been lucky. Regardless of what I eat, I've never had a problem with needing to dash to the bathroom, if you know what I mean. I'm just having all-day long nausea. From the minute I wake up til the minute I go to bed. The nausea is so constant...but sometimes I can't tell if I'm just really hungry or if I'm nauseated. (Cause ya know how sometimes you feel nauseated if you're SUPER hungry?). But I don't feel like eating ever cause of my nausea! I don't even like food anymore! I *HATE* eating, nothing ever sounds good...except ice cream lol. And popsicles seem to soothe my tummy. But anything solid, like chicken...gaaaag. I just had to force some down out of necessity.
Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do about it? I mean I guess it's nice to be freed from my food addiction - I was one of those people who could eat themselves silly, an emotional eater, etc. But I don't wanna hate food! It makes eating very difficult, and since it's necessary to live...ya know..haha.
Sorry if this was just a huge whine-fest, but I'm sick and tired of feeling like garbage all day long!
How long have you been on met? I thought my sickness would never go away. Ive been on it about 2 months now and it seems to be dying down, but the naseau will get to me still every now and then. I also think it makes it worse if you eat carbs.

Hi,
Sorry to hear you have so much nausea. I have been suffering from nausea due to met and lots of other medication together. I went to local pharmacy last night as had enough and they gave me without prescription some anti nausea medication and I feel so much better, so don't suffer anymore.
Hope this helps.

I had a similar experience the first few weeks while I was on Met. I never felt like eating and it was so difficult to keep going because I still had to go to work. The only thing I could force myself to eat was salad. Nothing else.
Maybe your body needs more time to get used to the lower dose. How long did you stay on 500mg a day? Even though my doc told me to go from 500 mg to 1000mg after a week, I think I stayed on 500mg for two weeks because I felt my body still wasn't accustomed to the lower dose yet. When I felt like I was feeling better I bumped it up to 1000mg a day.
I think I've been mostly lucky. I don't think Met made me nauseaus, etc. Some people have even said it gives them horrible headaches. I'm so thankful to God that I adjusted well with Met, since it is such a crucial part of treatment for PCOS.
I've been on Met twice, and both times I've noticed when I first started taking it, I was nauseous all the time, and food didn't really appeal to me as before. Also, in my case the foods I did eat, tasted differently than they did before I was taking the Met and also seemed less appealing. My solution was to eat small amounts throughout the day of whatever I would normally, and eventually the nausea wore off, after at least a month I think, and the food started to get its normal taste back. GL!

Girl...I am on the same page, my doctor started me on glumetza 8 day ago...and I have vomited 2 times nad had nauseous all day.. I just started using sea band...they have help 80 % .. I only feel nauseous for couple hours after I take the meds... I also, started a atkins diet to see if this helps. try the sea band 9.99 at walgreen
Yes I was terribly nauseated for about two weeks when my dosage was upped from 500mg to 1000mg and then 2000mg. My doctor actually said that was part of the reason it helps people lose weight!
I adjusted to the new dosage but am now having mild abdominal cramps and chronic diarrhea, for the last several days. I don't know if it's the met or what, but I am going to have to see a doctor later this week if it doesn't improve.
Right now I suspect diverticulitis (my mom has it) but I'm not sure.

I've been on met for years, and I still have to take immodium sometimes. It did mess with my stomach, but it got better as my body adjusted. I also hated eating. I would want something for dinner, I'd fix it, then didn't want it when we sat down to eat. That also passed. However, ever since I started met, sweets usually taste too sweet. So instead of the giant piece of cake I would normally eat, I take one or two bites and pass the rest to DH. I was miserable at first, but it has helped a great deal.
Funny I noticed the same things about sweets...I used to be able to just eat away and now things can taste too sweet to me. However, I now seem to be responding to sweets the same way everyone else does. Before when I could keep going people would say, holy I can't believe you can keep eating that. Its way too sweet for me"...now I'm more in line with everyone else and feel the same way. I think in the long run, it really isn't that bad a thing.

I have been on Met for 3 weeks also almost. I started on July 6. I am also taking 500mg 2x's a day. I have not had any problems whatsoever. Once when I took my pill with only a small breakfast I felt sick until lunch but other than that it's been cool. Do you take your medicine with food? And do you take them one at a time? Try to take one during the morning and one at about 6:00 in the evening

"The things impossible for people are possible for God" Luke 18:27
Hang in there it will get a little easier. Some people adjust with no symptoms after a while. I have been on it for 5 months and still have to take immodium sometimes. Its worth it once your body adjusts, just dont stop taking and try to start again then you have to start all over with this nasty stomach fun... GL !

I found a connection with the nausia and sugar. I found that if I dont eat some sugary fruit or milk first thing in the morning I will feel sick all day. I still feel slightly nausiated some of the time anyhow. It has been the thougt that maybe my sugar is low and the reason for the nausia. If I feel it starting I go after some sort of healthy/natural sugar.
I guess nausea in the beginning on met can make you lose weight but not that is not the reason in general makes people lose weight.
You lose weight as being insulin resistatn (ie PCOS) makes your insulin levels and blood glucose levels higher.. causing you not to lose weight as easily and also causing a BIG increase in appetite and also cravings for high GI foods, which causes a vicous cycle..
met fixes or helps the problem by lowering insulin and blood glucose - there fore the body more able to BURN fat and one of the first things you'll notice (not counting the nausea, after that is over is - a greatly reduced appetite.
High insulin - big appetite - especialy for sugar and high gi things..
Being on an extended release metformin (In australia it is Diabex XR ) can reduce nausea and always have during or after a big main meal.
eat small regualar meals daily - never let your stomach get too empty as this can cause nausea.
