Default Why is it unhealthy to have irregular periods?

I guess the title says it all
Does it cause infertility? How? I've just never been worried about not getting periods because I didn't think it's a big problem but everyone else says it is..so..yeah..I'm just curious.

First I love telling people how great it is for planning vacations weddings and such and not have to worry about having my period. Knowing the irony I would always tell people ... if it ain't broke don't fix it ... knowing full well it's broke.

Anyways there are health risks to not having regular periods and the longer you go between periods the greater the risk. Because you aren't shedding your lining every month there is a greater risk for uterine cancer, in addition there is an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

This isn't a guarantee that you will get these but it is one cause that there is no immunization for. Personally I'd like my cake and eat it too...no periods and everything will be ok...

I am also told that if you are on medication to get your period should you try to get pregnant it could be easier...again no guarantees...but it's something.

Depending on your age, it's a sign that 'something' isn't functioning properly in your body. It might be something minor, but it's best to get to the doctor and let him/her determine the cause.

You don't have to use BCP's to get a period. The doctor can give you a medication to take (Provera) every 3 months or so to induce a period if you don't have one on your own, or you can use natural progesterone cream to do the same (Provera is progesterone as well). You can get natural progesterone cream at GNC.
