Hello everyone, I was diagnosed with pcos about a month ago. when i went to the doctor my first priority was ttc and i forgot to ask such an important question. He did a sonagram and saw that i had the "ring of pearls" and said i had pcos. my questions are... do these cysts ever go away on their own? if they do is it painful? thanks a bunch.
Yes, in some instances cysts may regress. PCOS cysts are formed because your ovary is growing follicles for some reason is not releasing them. In a normal ovulatory cycle, FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) causes the egg cells to grow each month, and LH (luteinizing hormone) causes an egg to be released. The other follicles that were forming regress.
What usually happens with PCOS is that the FSH grows the follicle and LH sends the signal to release the egg. For one reason or another, the eggs do not respond and basically tell your body that no, it's not going to release an egg. LH sends another signal, and another, driving LH levels up. This is why cysters have high LH levels and often have cysts. Generally, they are not painful.
As your LH levels come down, the cysts CAN regress over time. When I was diagnosed, my ovaries were near normal size with several cysts. After 3 months of BCPs, I was cyst free (I didn't have a whole lot of cysts to begin with, but still the ones I had regressed!). Still, after stopping BCPs and 2 months of Metformin, my ultrasound shows no sign of any cysts.

Let me explain-
You are more prone to these cysts-they may grow and sponatneously rupture and more may grow again
it is a vicious repeative cycle!
This cycle is one of the reasons we are at risk for CA
and one of the many health reasons why we need tx
BCP are great to help regulate cycles
however some people cannot tol the mood swings it causes
it gave them to me so badly I thought I was bipolar!
I tolerated Provera-shots-well
but gained 60 pounds and have since been told I should NEVER have been on it because of the PCOS
as a cyster-we need periods because of the vicious cyst cycle
we need those hormonal changes to help improve our chances to NOT get CA
