Default Will Perming Cause Increased Hair Loss For An Already Balding Person?

I've been losing my hair quite steady now for just over a year. I've lost anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of my hair. At this point, the shedding seems to be less severe although I've never had any new growth.

I have numerous thin/bald spots that I try to cover as best I can. The worst is on the upper back of my scalp. I've found that the only way to truly hide it is to wear my hair back in a headband or ponytail, although that is proving difficult lately too because now I'm noticing terrible thinness at my temples.

A co-worker of mine also has experienced thinning hair for a different reason. The thinness was quite noticeable to me until she recently got a perm. I couldn't believe how much fuller her hair looked and I could hardly tell that she had thinning hair.

Now I want to get a perm but am afraid that it will make my hair fall out even worse.

Anyone have any thoughts?

i am a hair stylist and no imo perming will not make your hair loss any worse in the sense of making it stop growing...but it may cause breakage of the hair you do have if your hair is very fragile to begin with.... my suggestion is to find a reallllly good hairstylist who will give you an honest opinion...some very inexpensive places will do anything to your hair for money...but a decent place will do it if they feel its okay or suggest perhaps a different hairstyle...and i hate to say this..but its true that some perms are verrrry harsh and some or more gentle and a place that is good will most likely have more gentle perms..

i am sorry you are going through this..hair loss is so hard..good luck xox jenn

Update:

I got a perm last Saturday. She used the biggest rods she had to give me a lose, body perm and she used the mildest perm solution available since I was so frightened of breakage.

The perm has given my hair a fuller look, but unfortunately, there was still breakage and I can actually feel stubble on parts of my scalp, mostly in the area where my bangs are. My perm will have long grown out before the stubble will.

hey, i used to be a hairdresser too.. when people were concerened about breakage i'd always do a fully processed test strand and show them how the hair was after, somtimes theres no way of knowing what will happen untill you test it or do it.
