Default It won't stop!

Hi all,

I'm new here and newly diagnosed. I was diagnosed with diabetes in July, and at the same time my doctor talked to me about PCOS. At this point, we're just working to get my blood sugar under control.

I started Metformin and BCP (Yasmin) in early August. I am doing continuous birth control, where you take active pills for 12 weeks, and then have 4 periods per year. At least, that was the plan.

I started my period on 9/5, while still taking the active BCPs. I left for vacation the next day (horrible timing), and basically have been bleeding since. It's completely out of control. I go through a tampon and pad at least every 2 hours, and I'm not getting much sleep because of this.

I finally saw the doctor on Tuesday when I got home, and she thinks this is being caused by the Yasmin, and since I hadn't had regular periods for about 8 months before that, this is just cleaning out my uterus. Regardless, she said this was not normal.

She prescribed a different type of BCP, with a higher level of estrogen. I'm supposed to take 3 pills per day for 5 days, and this will supposedly stop my period, then I can go back on Yasmin (and will probably have another period).

I've been taking the pills for two days now, and sometimes it seems like my period is going away, and then all the sudden it will come gushing back (sorry for the imagery!). I also have HORRENDOUS cramps. I don't know what to do.

Has this happened to anyone else? Was it really caused by BCPs? From what I've read, it seems more likely caused by the Metformin. Anyone have any tips to get through this?

I'm really suffering.

Thanks in advance for all your help. And I must say, I've been reading here since my diagnosis, and this place is a wealth of information and support.

I was on BCP from 15-23. At around 24 I decided to try the Nuva Ring (my favorite one) again. As soon as I started, my bleeding didn't stop for weeks. My hormone levels were all whacked-out. My doctor suggested taking an even lower-dose pill, but I decided to get off everything. You might just need to find a low-dose pill that works with your hormones.

I just got off of Yasmine for the exact same thing you are describing. I was on it for a long time. The first month was a little breakthrough bleeding. Starting in month 2, I was having basically 2 periods a month. I would bleed during the second row of pills. I was switched to a higher dose (femcon). I am just about to finish the first month. I've had no issues at all. I would talk to your doctor about it. My doctor said it was because it was low dose and I have low estrogen, too.

Good luck! I know it is such a pain!!!

Just wanted to add that my best friend is having the same problems as you. She was also having 4 periods per year, but the Yasmin is causing her to have very long, heavy periods and she has a lot of break through bleeding as well. Seems to be a problem with Yasmin.
