Colleen,

Thanks!! We're so excited about the baby, I NEVER in a million years thought I'd get pregnant without fertility meds, but 4 months of Met and a little levothyroxin and WHAMMO, BIG surprise, Dr. M was thrilled for me and asked me to send a picture once the baby arrives.

I don't think you're crazy at all for making the drive, when I first went to his office, I drove the whole way over to Philly from here, which was almost a 4 hour drive for me. This was after spending years and years going to regular doctors who just told me "take some BCPs, you'll be fine". I had my current regular doctor (who was doing my physicals, etc) tell me that if I didn't want to take a BCP then there was nothing anyone could do (hello!!! I told her I wanted to try to get pregnant within a year, WTF good would a BCP do??). So I was willing to go pretty much ANYWHERE to get some real help. I took my mom with me and we were SO happy when we talked to him, it was like after years and years of being told I was nuts, someone FINALLY listened to me!! If he moves to California, I'll fly out to visit him

Also, a lot of the blood tests he orders right in the office and they do them before you leave. He wanted me to do an abdominal ultrasound for fatty liver when I got back home, and I just went to the scanning place up the street and gave them my referral, he had no problem getting the results. I did have some blood tests done at my regular doctor's office and they didn't send him the results like they were supposed to, he had to get on the phone and yell at people, it was awesome, hehehe. So if you do get tests done locally, it might be worth while to call them about a week afterwards to make sure they sent the results like they were supposed to. My office was getting a little passive aggressive because I went over their heads to a specialist without them referring me, but OH WELL! I asked them for a referral and they wouldn't give me one, thankfully I have Blue Shield and I didn't NEED a referral, so I referred myself.

Thanks again Steph, I made the appt and I will see him on March 7!

Lina, I did go see Dr. Blasco. I went to his Bryn Mawr office because it is only about 10-15 min from my home. I wasn't really impressed. He did spend a good amt of time with me going over my Hx. I don't know if it was just his accent, but it seemed like he needed me to clarify everything I was talking about, not like when I saw Dr. Minassian. Then I had to undergo an HSG and no doctor performed this procedure it was 2 medical students and I was really unhappy about that. The HSG was a disaster, too. So I can't really recommend him one way or another. I just can't wait to go back to Dr. M.

I am so glad others think Dr. M is great, too! I've been seeing him since March and just adore him. He did my HSG, Sonohyst, and Laparascopy... and he is awesome; I'd recommend him to anyone.

I had an appt w/ him today... and I feel so fortunate that he is my RE. I told him he's mentioned on these message boards. I think we have a little Dr. M fan club! Hehehe!! I personally have about an 1hr drive, maybe a little less, to get to him. I chatted w/ 1 woman in the waiting room though who drives 4 hours to see him.

Best wishes to all!!

In Philly, I highly suggest Dr Katherine Sherif at the Drexel Women's Center (Broad and Race). She's great. (I actually like her better than Dr. Minassian.) She really takes time with you and will explain things to you and is very attentive to what you need and your concerns.

I have also seen Dr. Jackie Guttman at Northern Fertility (10th and Chestnut). She is good, but I have only seen her twice. She was recommended to me by Dr. Sherif and another physician for a uterine issue I had, and she is also incredibly knowledgable about PCOS.

Thank you SO much for this post! I am going to see Dr. Minassian at the end of this month and I have been told he's the best...but it's so nice to see that other Cysters say the same! Can anyone fill me in on what an initial appointment is like with him? What should I expect?

You're most welcome! So glad you have an appointment. I have one on 10/14. My first appointment was back in March and it lasted about 2-2.5 hours from walking in the door to walking out. I guess your appt. can be a little different depending on what your main concerns are - general pcos care, if you're having trouble starting a family, if you have an issue such as diabetes/endometreosis, etc.

But here's my story

I was informally dx w/ PCOS when I was 15, and 10 years later was newly married and wanted to start a family. Coming off BC pill after 10 years and with no cycle of my own, I knew I needed help. My gyn referred me to Dr. M's office.

Dr. M's nurse, Nancy, got me from the waiting room and we went to the exam room where she went over my primary reasoning for the appointment. She did my height/weight/BMI & blood pressure and asked me the date of my last period. She told me what to expect during this visit.

Then I met Dr. M in his office, across the hall from the exam room. Instantly, I liked him because he was so nice, down-to-earth, knowledgable, and really cared! We talked for some time, about my history, family history, symptoms, hopes for getting pregnant, etc. He explained what was probably (and he was right!) going on with me. He even drew some pictures and showed me some things on his laptop. He ordered lots of bloodwork and a semen analysis for my husband. He went over the tests he planned to do in helps of getting a better picture on everything. (They were done early April - hystersalpingogram at the Rdg Hosp. and Sonohyst in his office. My tubes were blocked and so later that month he preformed my laparascopy surgery.)

So after the talking we went back to the exam room for a physical exam -- like a normal breast exam/pap, but also checking for skin tags, darkness on the back of neck, and such. The nurse was right there the entire time and it was all totally comfortable for me. Then he'll want you to come back to review the bloodwork/test results in order to come up with the best course of treatment for you.

Oh yeah, My husband came with me to that first appointment. He was with me the whole time except for the physical exam/pap. He was allowed to stay during that time, but with the Dr, nurse, and me in the small exam room... I figured that was enough!

I assume they're sending you the new patient packet full of info and paperwork for you (and husband, if you have one) to fill out.

Nancy, Dr. M's nurse is the best, too! You can call anytime with a question. She is always so helpful and friendly, whether in person or on the phone!

If you have any test results, bloodwork, etc. from the last year from another Dr., I'd see if you can have a copy to take to your appointment. Or just tell him what the findings were.

Let me know if you have any other Q's or if there's anything else I can help with!

I started seeing Dr M. july2008 Him and hi staff are wonderful. He answers all your questions before you can even ask. Dr. M really gets excited when your test results are good and he cares how you and your DH are doing. I wouln't trade him or Nancy for anything. It takes me about 45 minutes to get to his office but to me any drive to see him is worth it. I am sooooo glad that my Dh and I found him.
Good luck to everyone.
