O.k., as you've probably guessed, I went in to the gyno yesterday and got me a positive diagnosis... it was the best monetary investment I've ever made!!!
Dr. D (an infertility specialist gyno who totally ROCKS) said that when he first saw me in his waiting area, he figured that I'd come for either PCOS or a thyroid problem... I supposedly presented as a "classic" case.
I inquired about metformin, and he said that he uses that in PCOS but wouldn't comment any more until he did further investigation. After a brief consultation/work up/history, he did a pap, took a swab (which I didn't get to the lab in time so they won't process it) and transvag ultrasound and showed me "all the pretty bubbles" (or something like that) in my abdomen. It was kinda scary to see.
After I got changed again and went to his outer consult room, he gave me the Rx for some antibiotics (to try and treat the obscene amount of discharge I seem to have) and metformin 500mg once daily.
He also said that I must lose 20-30 pounds (I absolutely agree and I hope that the met will help, along with a sensible diet and exercise) and that I should only really be eating Fish, Chicken and Vegetables... no chewing gum, ice cream, beef, hamburgers, pork, pizza, KFC or oxtail (a Caribbean dish that I absolutely

) I can handle not eating the red and white meat (I was a vegetarian for a time before I came to the Caribbean and have plans of resuming that dietary lifestyle when I return to Canada this summer... I'm also an ethnic Japanese and eat sushi as often as I can) but I think that it's a bit of a hardship to have to give up ice cream

I absolutely ADORE ice cream, eventhough I'm lactose intolerant.
Anyway, where do I go from here?
Should I try and get one of those Insulin Resistance type diet books and try to follow that? I am also trying to eliminate sugar from the diet. Is there anything else, other than the aforementioned foodstuffs that I should try to eliminate? Flour? Rice (gonna be hard, as the Japanese diet is heavy in rice... short grain brown rice I can handle and actually don't mind eating)
Exercise... hmmm... that's easy. Since I can't afford to operate a vehicle down here (gas is USD 4.50$ per IMPERIAL gallon) I ride my bike - everywhere. I also get a kick out of doing long distance walking (because I hate running)... I have done a few ½ marathons in the past 6 months, but my preferred distance is 10km. I haven't been out for a while and am feeling rather guilty about it but until now had kind of lost my motivation (besides, it's getting hot here, as summer and hurricane season quickly approach... who wants to walk miles and miles in >85ºF heat?).
Metformin... how much of a "wonder drug" is this? I've heard promising stories about it, but how long can/will it take before I notice a weight reduction? Does the 500mg/day dose seem low to you?
I'm supposed to go in for a check up in 6 weeks, so do you think I should inquire about increasing the dose at that time, or should I just keep quiet?
Sorry for the incessant questions and the rambling of my post... I'm just so frigging happy to have a diagnosis of something that I'd suspected I've had for a long time now.
