Default Worried & Confused

Hi Everyone, I am 21 years old have been diagnosed with PCOS in December 03. I had 2 periods a month for 3 months when I went to a doctor to discuss. After internal Exams, ultrasounds and blood tests I was diagnosed. Unfortunately the Gynocologist I went to was terrible. He basically told me I had this, gave me a little pamplet about it and put me on the contraceptive pill Estelle. Before this I had been off all contraceptives, not to conceive but to give my body a break (been on Depo Provera or the Pill since I was 14). Thankfully I did this because I discovered I had abnormalities! Anyway, the G basically fobbed me off with this pamphlet and told me as I was not trying for children now so not to worry about it. I would have children and if I had trouble he would put me on this pill to help conceive in the future but that there was nothing to worry about in terms of fertility. After this I felt so confused and like I had not been treated with any compassion or informed at all.

I have been going along with the Pill but have not liked being on it at all. For one I completely loose my sex drive on the pill. I started seeking alternatives and have just visited a naturopath in NZ called Brad Crouch who has said I have Thyroid problems and has put me on a range of different of pills.

I am still confused about the whole thing, especially the fact that I still have periods. Does this mean that I am fertile and ovulating?? I am extremely concerned about not being able to have children.

All in all I am very uneasy and worried at the moment.

just wanted to add a note to what's already been said...

you can have anovulatory bleeding (shedding the lining without ovulating)... that's what I had..

it may appear 'regular' or it could be like I was.. completely illregular.. sometimes I had two periods a month.. sometimes I bled for weeks/months on end..

I was put on Avandamet .. and it really seems to have straightened things out for me.. I'm already PG in less then 3 months of treatment (unusual to respond this quickly.. but wonderful ).

Also some birth control pills.. cause you to bleed regularly every month but prevent ovulation.. so you might appear whilst on them to have regular cycles but once you go off.. you are no longer getting the progesterone from the Birth Control pills to bring on your period... 'if' you were naturally ovulating progesterone would be produced by your body and unless you conceived that cycle.. it would bring on a 'normal' period.

Hope this helps ~Rae~

Thanks for that Rae, did the fact that you have PCOS have a bearing on starting a family now? Because of the chance of infertility I have been thinking about at what age (ideally of course!) I want to start a family.

Should I be having tests to find out if I can conceive now even if I am not starting a family?
