WTF? Dr wants me to lose weight B4 starting Met?!? After almost a month of waiting for the results of all my lab tests, I finally met with the endo today. Everything is normal except my SHBG, and on the basis of that, she thinks I may be insulin resistant. However, everything else--thyroid, fasting GTT, cholesterol, triglycerides, androgens--were in normal ranges. Still, she thinks that I probably do have PCOS, based on the symptoms.
She was lead researcher on a Met study here in the Czech Republic, so I asked her whether Met would be worth trying. She said that it certainly wouldn't do any harm and she would prescribe it for me--but that she wanted me to lose weight before I started it?!?!? I was flummoxed at this, since I have read that it helps some women who have had trouble losing weight take off some pounds.
She wants me to go to an obesity specialist to see if there's something they can do to help me. Now, I'm all for that, but not if it means another stupid delay!!! Or that they're going to try to put me on some 800-calorie liquid diet that will work in the short term but ensure I gain it all back with interest later.
WTF? She says that there are no long-term studies on Met's effectiveness in promoting ovulation, so she wants me not to take it until I am ready mentally and physically to have a baby. I feel ready now, but she's saying I should lose more weight, and we all know how easy that is!
For background's sake, I am 29 and want to start TTC in January. I had a m/c last month and have ovulated each cycle but very, very late (like day 90). I figured out that there was a problem a few months after going off the pill last January. I have been overweight my whole life (lowest adult weight was 170 after six months of starving myself during a depression that followed 18 months of being on Phen-Fen) but have always maintained an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits. I already exercise and eat right, so I don't know what an obesity specialist is going to be able to offer me. I am at 272 right now, having lost 16 pounds since my first GYN weigh-in in March--my apparent reward for 10 fricking months of hard work... I've also had considerable hair loss, some lovely new acne, and excellent new hair growth in places I don't want it. *sigh*
Anyway, I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a doctor recommend this route. In the end she gave in after I started crying and wrote me a scrip, but she asked me not to take it until I've met with the obesity people and talked to my GYN.
I am so frustrated right now. Doesn't she know I would lose weight if I could?!?
