I'm on the Yasmin pill, this is my second month of it and I have not gained any weight and have no problems with depression (and i was diagnosed with depression before hand and since starting it i have had really no problems.) I dont know what youre Dr told you but Yasmin is based on female hormones not male hormones. So you dont have the same issues as you would with most other birth control pills.
I hope this has helped in some way. Let me know if you have any more questions.
I was put on bcp at age 18 because my doctors didn't have the time or patience (or perhaps knowledge) to find out what was wrong when I complained about my lack of periods. I hated being on it. I gained 10 lbs that I've never been able to shed, lost my libido, and got incredible mood swings, no matter which pill I tried. I gave up bcp 4 or 5 years ago. The mood swings stopped immediately. The libido only returned when I started to eat well. The 10 lbs, unfortunately, have stuck!

i had been losing weight up until i sought out yasmin. i think this would happen with most any birth control, according to my body's reaction to it. i gained about 5 pounds in two weeks. it is very frustrating, but it is important to keep active and eating right and the weight can be lost....perhaps slowly...
i don't mind the weight gain so much because it really has done wonders for my skin (still have the break-outs during my period), for the hair, etc.
as for depression, i found mood swings to be terrible in the first week, but after that it seemed to simmer down. a few weeks later, i started to take zoloft to help deal with/prevent future constant mood changes (you might know this already, but it is also used to treat PMS). it helps.
There's a new Yasmin with about half the estrogen that might cause less mood swings, weight gain, etc. It's called YAZ. Same IR & hair friendly progestin as the big Yasmin.

I had EXCELLENT results with Yasmin. I am off of it currently because I'm TTC but the Yasmin helped with the hair problem, with my acne which I didn't even realize was a problem until after I went off of it, and it was relatively good for my weight (I gained no weight due to the Yasmin- only weight gain was due to Hypothyroidism out of control). Every woman is different as you can see from the other responses but I would say what have you got to lose? If it helps to rid of some of the nasty symptoms of PCOS then awesome! If not then you talk w/ the doc about your other options. Good luck!

Dede,
If you don't need BCP to prevent pregnancy, ask your doctor about Cyclical Progesterone therapy. I've been reading up on it. Sounds like it is better for PCOS than BCP. Check out
That's an interesting article, but I have two bits to yak over with that doc--#1 PCOS is not clear-cut black/white found to be genetic (yet). I will go to my grave believeing depo caused mine. #2 I love Prometrium but in my case, it didn't reign in AF. It did help weight gain to some extent. And when I was on spiro w/ Prometrium (and IUD 'cause spiro causes birth defects) AF was still wild--usually if spiro is messing up AF it needs bcp to stop bleeding.

Deedee, I agree with cjboo, Yasmin is supposed to be great for PCOS. I have been on it for 2 years now and am doing fine. I only use it and diet to control my PCOS, no medication. I have had good luck with it and no ill side effects. My doctor sited studies that show how well it works for women with PCOS, becuase of its makeup and lack of male hormones. Every one does react differently to different pills and some people don't react at all in negative ways. You may just have to give it a test run per say.

I must admit that I don't like BCPs in general, but Yasmin is a good one. I'm currently taking it again (while in school I started having a good bit of breakthrough bleeding and switched to higher dose pill). It has helped my acne, and I have not gained any weight on it. My periods are back (yay?) and except for the first few months, haven't been very painful or heavy.
Now, I do sometimes get leg cramps when I start a new pack, but that's because of its effect on electrolytes. I just eat an extra banana the first couple of days. I also am getting migraines again, sometimes in the middle of a pack but usually at the end, so I'm thinking I'll start skipping placebo pills. My doc doesn't mind.
But as far as BCPs go, I think it's a very gentle one. :-)
The leg cramps might be caused by the type of progesterone in Yasmin. It is supposed to work in a similar way as Spriro. I believe like Spiro, it works like a potassium sparing diuretic and can cause potassium build-up. Read the drug facts that came with your prescription to make sure I've got the thing about the potassium correct. If so, you should be careful to avoid foods high in potassium (like bananas & cereals fortified with it). If it's just the opposite, and causes you to lose potassium, then you should eat bananas and such. Just search on google for high potassium foods.
Spironolactone IS a potassium-sparing diuretic. That means go easy on bananas, strawberries, potatoes, OJ.
Potassium-losing diuretics are stuff like Lasix, Hydrochlorothiazide, etc. Unrelated to PCOS. But if you're on one of them AND spiro/Yas-family, you are okay with bananas.
