Default Yasmin Liver Problems??

I've been on Yasmin since October. Before that I'd lost 10 kg and kept them off for over a year. Since then I've gained 5 kg. And the last few weeks I've been VERY ill and my liver function tests are through the roof! Can't tie it in to anything I've eaten, I don't drink alcohol, etc and no sign of hepatitis. Now I'm wondering if it could be tied to Yasmin. Anyone else had problems like this??

I recently had my liver enzymes go through the roof. My doc said BCPs is often the culprit. So he took me off them, but when they retested my blood, they were still off. It is definitely worthwhile to go off your BCP and have your blood tested after a month. I know that doesn't sound like something you want to do. I was stressed about going off my BCP. But when it comes to the liver, you can't mess around. It's best to know if this is why your levels are messed up. When I did research on liver enzymes, it said that alcohol (duh!), tylenol, advil (yes, both kinds of pain meds!), obesity, and BCPs can all mess up liver enzyme levels. Definitely get this checked out thoroughly! Also, just because you have no signs of hepatitus doesn't mean it's not there. That is something you should have checked out too. All these things can be checked out with a couple vials of your blood.

I take Yasmin. I have been very sick for the last few weeks. How did you find out if was your liver? I haven't been to the Dr. But I am going on Friday. I want to ask the right questions and have her check what needs to be checked. Thanks

Just letting you know that I had a stone in the bile duct of my liver which was causing the problem. I had an attack during Monday night/Tuesday morning and the pain was excrutiating! I'm home from hospital and getting better.

nire_3 : Sorry this is late but I'm just out of hospital: The first indication that it was a liver problem was the VERY bright yellow urine, though I was drinking LOTS of water (urine was brown first thing in the morning). Also my stools were pale and my whole body was VERY ITCHY! (I didn't turn yellow/jaundiced until the second attack) Also a low grade temperature and no appetite.

You can ask your doc to do liver function tests. There are several tests (bilirubin, Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), albumin, etc) BUT note that your liver function levels can go through the roof if you have gallstones. And if you have to choose between liver stones or gallstones, pray for gallstones. I've had both and both are extremely painful, but the gallstone was that little bit easier to deal with. JMHO.

Good luck!
