Default Yasmin, Ortho-Tri and cystic acne

Hi Everyone,

I have been on Ortho-Tri and Metformin for many months now and my cystic acne is still pretty bad. I was thinking about asking the endo about Spironolactone instead of the Met. But then I started doing some research about BCPs. Turns out Yasmin is derived from Spironolactone.

Should I consider switching to Yasmin? Perhaps Yasmin and Met might the right PCOS cocktail for me? Anyone have experience with cystic acne and Yasmin?

Any words of encouragement would be welcome... I am miserable because my face is a mine field.

Hi,

I was on Yasmin and found it to be a good birth control for me. I am also on Spiro now. Yasmin has a small amount of spiro in it and if you are on a birth control for birth control, I think it's worth it try Yasmin.

But if your acne is pretty bad, I'd also consider asking for spiro w/ yasmin. Some doctors won't give both, but I think you'd probably benefit from both. If you have to chose, based on my sis who has been on both Yasmin and Spiro separately too, I think spiro (cause it's a bigger dose) gave her the most benefit, but she was only on Yasmin for a short period of time. A friend I know has had her acne helped w/ Yasmin, but she only had a mild case on her forehead. She is not pcos btw.

And finally, I've posted a couple times here that I love alpha lipoic acid and I'm seeing how it's helping my sister who has acne so I'd recommend adding that--it can't hurt plus it's cheap and easily available. I take it orally 100mg in the beginning--but now they have 200mg capsules. They also have it in face creams but those are pricey and personally, I think it's most effective taken as a vitamin.
