Default Yasmin For PCOS or Loestrin24 and Spironolactone For PCOS

I came across this article trying to find a better BCP for PCOS instead of Yasmin because of all the news i been hearing about it. This article was last updated on Jan 2008 so i am not sure about it but this is what i read.

I got this from Yahoo Health regarding medication for PCOS (i am unable to post the link)
"The Yasmin birth control pill is considered "potentially ideal" for PCOS hormone treatment. This is because it contains the progestin called drospirenone, which is antiandrogen."

But i was wondering of taking Loestrin24. In the same article i read

"Androgen-lowering sprionolactone (Aldactone), which is a diuretic. It is often used with estrogen-progestin therapy. This improves hair loss, acne, and abnormal hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism.) "

It said that "Spironolactone reduces androgen levels, which reduces male-pattern hair growth (hirsutism), hair loss, and acne for women with PCOS.
Spironolactone used alone can cause irregular bleeding and could cause problems if used during pregnancy. For these reasons, it is usually taken along with birth control pills. It is used to control irregular menstrual bleeding and to reduce hirsutism."

So i am thinking of discussing this with my doctor but if anyone has tired something like this then please let me know. I am thinking of taking Loestrin24 and Spironolactone. Can anyone tell me of the side effect they had if you took any of the two medication.

I've taken spiro and birth control (Necon) off and on since I was 15 and first diagnosed with PCOS. It has been the best combo for me. I've never used spiro alone because it can cause birth defects...so I've always paired it with a bcp like Necon. I've never had side effects from the combo. My mom has done the same combo with positive results as well.

Hope that helps!!

I take Yasmin and Spiro together. I haven't had any side effects from taking the two together. I do know that because Spiro is a potassium sparing diaretic you need to have your potassium levels monitored periodically. My doctor usually checks mine once a year.
