Question Yasmin Problems?

Hello..I'm new!

My nurse practioner had me start Yasmin 28 to get rid of my periods to hopefully get rid of an ovarian cyst.
I started them on a Sunday, the same day as my period started and it hasn't stopped for 2 weeks now? And now signs of slowing down either.
But besides that is my mood change. I feel like a zombie, I'm crying and have extreme anger/rage..which is not me. I have to think they are from the pills as the mood thing started the same time as the pills.
I've put two calls into my doctor's office but can only talk to the nurse and she said it just takes time for my body to adjust and to only call back if I feel light headed from losing too much blood!
The mood thing, I cannot handle though. I am not myself!
I've tried doing some research on it and can't find anything, only that depression can be a side effect. Which at this point I don't want to go as far as saying depression, but I could very well see it turning into that??
I did stop taking the pills yesterday, but now I don't know if I should just take two today and try to stick it out.
The last nurse I talked to said at least give it another week, but honestly I don't know if I want to have this major "funk" another week?
Anyone else have the emotional side effects from Yasmin like this?
And the prolonged period definitly isn't helping either though.

I don't really have any great advice for you but... you have my sympathies. I just went back on Yasmin and I was crying over NOTHING last week... at one point I was feeling frustrated because I had called my endo asking for a referral to a shrink because I know I need antidepressants (primarily to deal with the darn BCPs, go figure!) and the person she referred me to wasn't in my network... I broke down crying over that, knowing it was absurd... later I was crying because I felt cleaning the house was so stressful, there was dust under the dial on the phone I couldn't get to... where does dust come from, why can't I ever defeat it, it's all so useless, on and on... I mean, stupid stuff. I spent a good 1/2 hour SOBBING over stupid stuff.

Every time I go on a BCP I feel this way. I just don't feel right. I feel irritable over everything, everything rubs me wrong.

And they say, give it time. Give it three weeks. Give it three cycles.

That is a long time to feel like biting someone's head off!!!

Hard to say anything about the bleeding. I spotted the first time I was on yasmin, but not this time.

Have you ever had prolonged bleeding like this before?

All I can say is, BCPs do whacky things... Sorry I can't say conclusively if it's the yasmin, if you should stick with it or quit...

Thanks for the reply. I hope you do find something that works for you.

I ended up stopping the pills last Friday, by Sunday I could tell I was getting back to my 'old' self again..mood wise anyway.
The bleeding still continued but is definitly slowing down! I would say it should be stopped in a day or so.
I'm going to try and call the Nurse Practioner again, and see if she wants to try a different brand.
Otherwise, I've lived with this cyst for 17 years and have dealt with it, so that's fine too.
I was really looking forward to NO periods though!

Take care, hope you find some help yourself.

Hi there,

I started Yasmin last month (I'm in my first set of non-active pills now) and I too had huge mood swings the first two weeks....I was so incredibly tired and depressed. I felt like I could cry at the drop of a hat. Granted, my boyfriend and I broke up in January so that has been an ongoing source of stress, but it seemed to get worse during the first two weeks of Yasmin.

I'm getting ready for AF any second now on my first month of Yasmin, and I really feel fine although a little PMS'y.....

Some people just need to get used to the huge surge in hormones that happens when you are adding new stuff to the mix. Hopefully this won't be a monthly thing, but by the third week I felt fine.

I had one really bad leg cramp one night though that scared me a bit, but I've felt pretty good otherwise. Oily skin is a little better, and breakouts are a little better.

Good luck!

Jen

Yep, depression is what I get with every bcp I`ve ever tried including Yasmin! There is this black cloud that descends and just doesn`t lift - the only time I feel better is during the seven no-pill days.

Just can`t take the bcps - make my hair loss worse as well.

Have you tried Progest cream to give your ovaries a rest and give the cyst time to heal? If you take it for the whole month it stops you from ovulating and so no pain (in my case, I used to get acute pain at ovulation time, sometimes so bad I needed to be hospitalised) and less activity in the ovaries.

Hope you feel better soon - I empathise with your feelings about housework, though, what a neverending bind!

Default Weird!

The only time I feel *bad* on Yasmin is during my placebo week. I am a joy to be around the other three. Oh well, we're all different!

Tried Ortho-Tri, terrible terrible. Mircette saved my life. Then tried Yasmin which was OK but had some side effects.

Now I'm back on Kariva (generic Mircette) with a low dose of Spiro. Ten bucks a month and I'm in a deliciously good mood.

I took that quiz and I'm Curry Flavored, how cool is that?

Yasmin has a high estrogen affect which may be causing you to feel the way you do. My doctor told me many women are reporting the same thing with it. Maybe try a pill with lower estrogen affect like ortho-cyclen. Check out the wite at the top of the bcp section from family practic notebook and look for estrogen level under the different pills.

Good luck-its trial and error!

I couldn't do Yasmin...tried it, no mood swings, just that my blood pressure went up. I had to come off of it. I am now waiting to start a new pill, Dr suggested to wait one month and then start all over. Good luck and maybe it will work for you once it has had time to get in your system. I hope it does, it seems to be a good pill.

OK, I am confused. I was always told that Yasmin was relatively "low" in estrogen compared to some pills that are out there. I clicked on one of the links at the top of this board and it says that Yasmin has 30 mcg of estrogen, and ortho-cyclen has 35 mcg. So, doesn't that mean that the ortho actually has more estrogen than the yasmin? Shouldn't she actually go to something like Allesse or Mircette for the smallest possible dose of estrogen if that is the problem? Or am I reading this chart backwards?

Yip the only week I get trouble from Yasmin is the free week. Bad headaches and bad moods are usually the order of the day. The other three weeks are GREAT!

When they put me back on the pill 2 years ago, it took 3 kinds before I found one that didn't make me crazy. It happened to be Yasmin and it was done on request from me. I am the one who introduced it to both my Dr and my pharmacy! It did help the acne and hair loss. I didn't have leg cramps either.
I did have nausia issues and some mood swings but only the 5 days prior to AF. (Before it was all month long)

Here is what I have discovered....

Yasmin is actually one of the STRONGEST BCP's.
(GYN informed me in Jan) But said it was the best for PCOS.

There are many side effects to the pill.(any pill)
But each woman can have "intolerance" issues.
In other words, you may have a reaction that others do not.

Each brand of BCP has a dif mix of the ingrediants.
I have never bothered to look into the diferences.
But when I was told Yasmin was the strongest, it put 2 and 2 together for my endometreosis flair up. Yes estrigen fuels the endo. So for women with endo who are taking certain types of pills will have more issues because of the rapid growth of the endo.

Then on another hand, some forms of the pill are the only relief some women have from endo. Back to ingrediant combos.

My Dr will not say the pills contributed to my issues, but I believe they did. Because it was at that time when things got much worse and I was in pain 24/7. Who knows for sure, I'm no Dr.
But hey...They don't know either!

So for an update...
Since being off Yasmin and GlucXR this last month...
I have oily skin, feet pain is back, headaches and greesy hair.

So I'm not exactly a happy camper.

It is all a matter of choices, What are you willing to deal with and for how long?
Now go from there. There is no reason they can't make a new appt to discuss it. There were weeks I was in their office weekly.
Yes it got old, but I refused to give up.

Peace,
Patty

Here is what I just found.....

The pill can help control Endometreosis

But it aggrivates Adenomyosis.

That is why I had so much trouble.

Thought I would share.

Hi,

You have to drink a lot of water whilst taking Yasmin because there is a diuretic in it - did your doctor tell you that? Not driking enough might cause dry skin and wrinkles to turn up because the body just gets dehydrated and the skin needs lots of water.

Bcps play havoc with my hair and skin too - Yasmin gives me spots in a couple of days and my hair starts falling out more. I always feel yukky on the pills - sort of ill-ish - sick, depressed, weepy, no sex drive just yuk basically. I guess that might get better in time but I never get that far - when my thin hair starts falling out, I just have to take action.

Coolcat,

You say that Yasmin contains a diuretic. My Gynae recently said that Yasmin contains Spironolactone, is this true? I was sceptical because he is such an idiot but maybe he is right after all?

Hi Nicci,

Yes, Yasmin does contain Spironolactone which is a diuretic. This is why so many women lose weight on it. You need to drink a lot if you take it and you might find you need to go to the loo a lot more. One of the down sides for me!

Take care.
