I have been taking Yasmin since August, but today my dr switched me to Yaz. I'm wondering how ya'll like the Yaz? is it better than Yasmin? anyone had any side effects?

so there is hair growth with yaz instead of loss? i lost with yasmin, thats why i'm afraid to start yaz. the dr told me to go to www.costco.com and get pure gel CoQsol and take 200mg a day and to get pur gel Fish Oil 400mg/day BUT its like 50.00 for both of those, and they have them at Wal-Mart but they are even higher really, so i decided to wait and just keep taking my Prenatal and B-Complex and see if they help regrow my hair. I'm just afraid of starting Yaz and having the bleeding for like a month straight, I don't think I can handle that.

i noticed hair growth, less acne while on yasmin.. and i think i see hair loss/ more acne while on YAZ.. my side effects are coming back! the only good thing i could say about YAZ is that there are only 4 white pills.

I switched to Yaz from Yasmin this summer and am thinking of going back to Yasmin. (or quitting altogether, but that's another post )
Yaz spreads the bcp hormones out to 24 days instead of 21. What that means for me is that my PMS symptoms still start at the beginning of week 3 but AF is delayed. I don't start AF until the day I start my new pack of pills. After 3 months on Yaz, my periods ARE lighter and shorter .... although the first 3 months I had horrible cramping and extremely heavy periods on Yaz. In a nutshell, my PMS symptoms are pretty bad on Yaz and they last longer than on Yasmin b/c of the 24 day pack of pills.

I am in the same boat as you, as I'm starting Yaz and 200mg Spiro to combat sudden severe hair thinning at age 31. I'm only 1 week into it. Saw palmetto helped so it's likely the Spiro will too.
I understand BCP w/ higher doses of estrogen are better for hair loss & regrowth but I'm starting with low dose Yaz for 3-4 mos. so as to (hopefully) avoid a dread shed when moving up to something stronger.
According to Dr. Geoff Redmond, a endocrinologist specializing in hair loss, Yasmin is the most widely used BCP in the US and is effective for hormonally caused hair loss. He also recommends Mircette and Yaz. Good luck and happy regrowth!! (I've noticed mild regrowth on Saw Palmetto and Revivogen since Feb.)

saw palmetto 1500mg/day (will be phasing out since I'm on spiro now)
NOW prostate support (Nettle, Pygeum) 2 pills/day (will be phasing out)
MSM (sulfur that extends hair's growing cycle)
Omega 3, 6 fatty acids (naturopath prescribed)
various Adrenal regulators (my high testosterone seems from my adrenals)
Cholesterol Support Multi (has lots of hair friendly stuff from Puritan)
200mg Spiro
Yaz
Shampoos: Revivogen, Ketoconazole (2x week), Nisim shampoo + topical
healthy diet, exercise
Rinse - crudoleum 1X/week (naturopath prescribed), coffee/cayenne/sage/vodka rinse to enhance blood flow (natural Rogaine)
I just wanted to stop in and say thank you to you ladies that posted about Yaz. My doc wanted me to go on it and after reading the good, the bad, the ugly.. my hubby and I are just going to have to be careful.
After my ds, I am really worried about knocking these hormones out of wack. I have tried them all. Yasmine, the ring, the patches, loestrin, ortho's basically the whole gambit ...
Thanks again!

I am really excited to see the amounts of natural remedies you are on and that you share the same problem I do with alopecia. Basically I was wondering what you would suggest in terms of supplements in order to counteract the alopecia. Currently I just started evening primrose oil, biotin, B-complex, saw palmetto, flaxseed oil and spironolactone. But unfortunately my endo is very unsympathetic and unwilling to try anything else, plus I am only on 50mg of the spiro, which as I have researched, such a low dose is essentially useless in targeting alopecia. I am a premedical student and I am working on a chemistry major, so I have a little bit of background in medical research. Unfortunately, things such as dosages for something as specific as pcos is hard to find. So I was hoping for some suggestions and hopefully dosage specifics with the products that have helped you thus far.
So sorry to hear of your hairloss problems. Are you diagnosed PCOS or just "high androgens" like me?? If your t is coming from your adrenals (cortisol), you may benefit from cortisol regulators (Ashwaganda, Relora) to get to the root cause while squelching the t with other things...
I would highly recommend you see another endo or a GYN. My endo would not prescribe Spiro (t was only "slightly" high, but enough to cause dread shed) but my GYN was VERY sympathetic. I showed her the test results and she was compassionate and prescribed Spiro 200mg + guided me with BCP. Agree 50mg Spiro is a "why bother" amount for alopecia.
In the meantime, it sounds like what you're doing is the best you can do without good dosages of the big guns. Recommend you make sure your B-multi has ALL the B's - many skip some. If ferritin is below 70, recommend you add an iron supplement. Make sure you're getting enough Magnesium (absorbed best w/ Calcium) and Selenium and Copper. Now that I've been supplementing for a few months, I'm thinking about ordering a hair test to see where I may be lacking which may help you too...
Recommend you use a DHT blocker shampoo (Revivogen is good). You may want to add a supplement with Pygeum and Nettle. Ultimately tho, Spiro (200mg) and bcp are the only things that seem to cause long-term stabilizing of hair loss in women w/ sensitive follicles (regardless of the cause). I've read some women regrow ALL THEIR HAIR on these 2 alone!! Good luck and give me a shout if you want to kno more.
I was on Yasmin for five years before I switched to Yaz this spring. I LOVED Yasmin; I didn't switch because I hated it. I loved it very much.
I switched because I have chronic inflammatory diseases that have been driving me nuts for YEARS, and after doing some research for a class on inflammation, I found that estrogen/estradiol has been known to have pro-inflammatory effects. Since I never had any chronic inflammation until after I began taking birth control, I decided I wanted to switch to a lower dose BCP.
Yaz is the only BCP with the same progestin as Yasmin (drospirenone--the anti-androgen!), and it has about 2/3rds the estradiol. I've been on it for a few months now.
I don't like it NEARLY as much as I liked Yasmin. All those "We're not gonna take it" commercials? Well, Yasmin's more effective for that; after all, it's a higher dose pill! My PMS and period symptoms have only worsened since switching. On Yasmin, I would have 3-4 day periods, with light bleeding on the last 2-3 days and ONE cramp to signal that my period was coming. I had very little acne except a small period breakout.
On Yaz, my periods aren't as bad as they were pre-BCP, but they're worse than Yasmin. My periods are heavier, with cramps lasting until the LAST day. I'm so unused to cramps now that they're really painful, even though I know I used to have worse ones. My period breakouts are much worse than they were on Yasmin either. I also don't usually get my period until the last couple days of placebos on Yasmin, and so I'm REALLY cutting it close on Yaz. Once, I had to wait a couple days after I finished the pack because I hadn't gotten my period, and I didn't want to start a new pack until I did.
I highly recommend Yasmin over Yaz. I would switch back, but I haven't had any inflammation since I switched. So we'll have to see.

You will never be forgotten.
Stephanie, Glad to hear about your experience on Yasmin. I'm a little frightened of creating estrogen dominance on it since the estrogen is so high. I read some women have dread shed after a few years on it from that. I think I'll stick with Yaz and go off of it quick if I have dread shed!
Lately, I've been obsessed with figuring out WHY my cortisol is so high (upconverted to testosterone/DHT). I'm obviously not reaching the root cause since the adrenal regulators (ashwagandha, Relora) and liver cleanse aren't helping long term... I had a eureka today, read that copper toxicity (low zinc) can cause poor iron absorption, high cortisol (upconverted to testosterone/DHT) and hair loss in women! Check it out - if it's your problem, it IS FIXABLE! I can't post links that I want to right now because the forum is not letting me...
It was so nice of you to respond so quickly and with such detail. I'm only 20 years old and I have only known that I have had this for two years now (by the way when I refer to "this" I do have PCOS). But prior to this last year the only effects I had seen were increased hair growth and acne. Though these def were not pleasant after starting Yasmin they got so dramatically better that it was amazing! But then the alopecia came on and this is just something I cannot handle. Its so ironic, whenever I hear of women who have noticed alopecia coming on there is never any notice of it until it gets really bad. Typically women cite having had "thick great hair," something that was once an asset. This was true for me. As for what my main problem is, it IS my adrenals. My DHEAS was so high that they suspected a tumor, and my cortisol was in the above normal range as well. My estrogen and testosterone weren't nearly as significant, and were actually in normal range. I am so glad that you know of something that is natural supplement for adrenal health. And I am so going to take your advice about the gyno. I am currently in between gynos b/c I have had some particularly bad experiences. Lastly, I will try to update on this situation after trying out some new things. Because one of the things that is most frustrating (though I honestly love this site!) is that someone will post a problem or a new therapy they are trying, but fail to update us. And most of the time we are just left with messages that are a cry for help, but left with a void of positive feedback. So I will try to be better at this. Thanks so much once again!
I found that estrogen/estradiol has been known to have pro-inflammatory effects.
Well not wonder my CRP levels went down so quickly in two months (from 4.92 to 0.67). I went off Yasmin in late April and started on a low gi diet (with no sugar, no artificial sweeteners). I was really proud of myself for making such great progress (thinking it was all about the new, good eating habits), but I'll take it any way it comes.

I just started Yaz this week, I was on loestrin24 fe and hated it, so I have a new dr who specializes in PCOS and other fertility issues. He was the only dr to actually do an ultrasound on my ovaries, and they are filled with the cysts, I was shocked. My testosterone level is very high (DHEA SULFATE) it was in the 700's back in January, so he had me get it checked again last week, and I go back in 6 weeks. He is an awesome dr and he even illustrated exactly what happens from the brain to the ovaries when you have pcos, I was so happy and I hope the Yaz cuts down on all the hair growth.
