This is my first post here at SC, but I was told I had PCOS when I was 13. I am now 28 and only recently saw a gyno in July that was willing to address my issues. He put me on 1500mg metformin a day and yaz birth control. I started taking the yaz and met right away. I finished up my first month of yaz over a week ago and got my perio 3 days later. The first 3 days it was very light, as in, nothing on the pad, just pink toilet paper. The 4th day, it became heavy. Not as heavy as some have reported, but i was wearing a super plus tampon that had to be changed every 3-4 hours. Yesterday it seemed to ease to the point that I believed it was stopping. I just finished showering and sat down on the toilet to put on a pad, just in case, and as I sat there I felt what I thought was drops of blood...when I stood up it was actually a clot about the size of an olive...so I am assuming my period is not over like I thought. This has been the crampiest period I have experienced in a really long time. I am wondering if this is normal for someone adjusting to new medications or is this typical for yaz or met. It had only been 2 months since I got my period without medication when I started this time so I didn't expect it to be any heavier or different than usual. Anyone with experiences similar or with these drugs, I would appreciate some sort of reassurance that this is normal or not unheard of. Thanks so much!
Jazzistar - I just started the yasmin and met combo this week so I don't have much to go on. But what is going on sounds very similar to the periods I get.

It might just be your system trying to get used to the changes. I'd give it a couple more days. If you are still worried, I'd call the Dr. If nothing else it will set your mind at ease. Good luck! Hugs!

My first month on Yaz/Metformin combo was pretty bad in terms of cramping and I felt like my body was still trying to stubbornly rebel against what the medicine was trying to do Before I started taking them I had had AF every other week and it felt like my body was trying to stay on that system, but the medicine was not letting it, so it was a little unconformable for a while. However, for me anyway, after the first month it hasn't been too bad. But in the first month I did have some of t he very same things you are describing. Hope that brings you hope. I think it takes a while for the body to adjust.
im on the combo. i do not start my period until i start my next pill pack. my light to heavy pattern is the same as it always is just in a shorter time frame. i also clot as well but some clotting is normal. i woldnt be alarmed unless the clot is egg-size and you have multiple clots.
I have been on the same combo for 4 months. My cramping is more severe than before and heavier bleeds. It's something I can live with. My gyn prescribed Yaz because it, supposedly, doesn't use testosterone. I am willing to live with a little more discomfort because of this. When I was on more common pills (Othro), my cycles were still irregular. With Yaz, I have been pretty consistent starting my cycle on Day 27-28.
im on the combo as well. my first month was awful! besides the terrible met side effects, i was throwing up and totally nauseus (sp?) from the yaz. my periods start very light and i have 1 day of heavy. my periods don't start until i a couple of days into a new pack. i haven't had any bad cramps (knock on wood).
I'm on both, 2nd month for Yaz, and 3rd week of Met. The only side effect I've noticed (once I got over the 3-week long Yaz breakthrough bleeding start) is that about 3pm every day, I'm crashing, now that I'm on both. If I take my morning Met pill later, like 11am, I'm crashing around 7pm. I can't understand why not having ENOUGH meds in my system seems to be making me sick to my stomach and weak, as I felt fine before I started taking any meds at all.
Maybe my blood sugar spikes after 6-7 from when I took my Met dose? Dunno, but it's a nasty development---it's not a Met side effect per se, I feel fine when I take it, but after a looong time, I'm hurting. Otherwise, Met/Yaz has been wonderful. I've lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks!
