Default YAZ Warning

I work in an OB/GYN clinic so I see a lot of drug reps who explain drugs to me. I have just recently been warned that YAZ can be more harmful to women with insulin resistance than good. It can actually make it worse. Also if you purchase YAZ make sure you look at the insert inside because there are also certain pain meds you should not take with it like Aleve.
Just thought I would pass on the info that was given to me. hope it is helpful.

Really? That's pretty wild, as the studies with Yasmin and metformin showed the women lost weight (metformin & 3rd gen progestin lost none). I will have to look up those studies--if they're released ha ha. I know the other progestins (Desogen, earlier pills) can make IR worse, that is common knowledge in medicine--even the pamphlets describe "impaired glucose tolerance" as a possible side effect.

The same is suspected to be true for many BCP's and women with pcos. See the conclusion (in red text) here:

I am printing that off and giving it to my GYN. She's telling me either BCP's or a full hysterectomy. I don't really know what options I have left at this point though. Yaz is making me go crazy!

Demulen (another BCP) made me crazy, too.

My mom didn't take DES with me, luckily...but I have read up on that before! WOW!

I really am beginning to loathe the pill. It's just creating so much havoc in my body.

i wonder if my BCP has done any serious 'damage'? i have been on BCP since 1999, only just diagnosed this year. my endo is dying for me to go off because he believes the fact i was on BCP minimized my symptoms, thus delaying my dxs. i was on trilevlen 28 from 99-06 and my horrible PMS symp. started coming back. went on yasmin (pre-yaz) and that was awful! now i'm on ortho and things aren't much better.

i had no idea that BCP was detrimental in any way. all the lit. i have read lists BCP as one of the first treatment options.

while i don't know your situation, a hysterectomy seems extreme especially when the alternative is only taking BCP. good luck!

That's why when my "pre-existing conditions" clause kicks in in March, I will be going elsewhere for a second opinion. I can't get one at the moment (health insurance- glad to have it but I can't get a second opinion at the moment, kind of a bummer). Because I was diagonosed with Adenomyosis, the only real "cure" is a partial hysterectomy, which I'm all for...but the GYN is saying I need a "FULL" hysterectomy? That's very extreme, IMO.

The likelyhood of it 'going away' is zero to none. I hoped the same 10+ yrs ago and had no idea it was PCOS nor did any doctor till just a year ago. A doctor finally addressed it and diagnose me, along with Insulin Resistance. I tried YAZ and I stopped a month later. I found it to make me an emotional basketcase, I felt fatigued and just horrible. I dont know how many of you with PCOS have read the South Beach Diet and its sections on Insulin Resistance, but for me, following those principles when I eat and just walking 3 times a week have made a remarkable difference as far as weight lose and overall well being goes. Its not always easy passing on the bread and tatters but in the long run, the way I feel physically when I do is well worth it.

My PCOS got a lot worse after 7 years on BC pills and I became IR as well. Its a combo of things that cause it..especially too much copper levels and synthetic estrogens

It seems that many doctors put women with period problems on BCPs just to shut them up and mask the problem. If you appear to cycle every month, at least you'll keep quiet (just my own experience talking here...) Heaven forbid someone actually take the time to try to *fix* the problem.

God bless you for posting this. Today I have been rolling the idea of giving in and actually starting the pill today. I'm so against it, that the thought of going on the pill has thrown me into a depression. I have now made my decision and will not take the pill.
