I cannot believe this forum! I just found out about it today and have been reading and reading. I cannot believe that I am no longer ALONE! I was diagnose with PCOS 20 years ago and all I was told was my levels were off and I would never have children! At 19 I was horrified...but now I am angry that I am only learning ALL about PCOS now! When I got married all the doctor wanted to do was put me on the pill to regulate me...I felt awful on them and stopped. After 5 years of Fertility treatments...nothing! A year later, somehow, I got pregnant with nothing (other than my husband...LOL) and I now have a beautiful 5 year old son...who is more of a miracle child than I originally thought! I wound up in the ob/gyn's office for an infection last Nov. and came out with Insulin Resistence Disorder brought about by the PCOS. He did give me a bit of info, but certainly not as much as I needed to know. So off to the internet I went and found out that PCOS was so far more entailed than I was ever told. I am angry about that too, however, I am focusing my attention now on healing myself and getting healthy. The Dr. put me on Metformin 1500 mg...had to stop at 1000 mg as I was getting sick...he also put me on that spiro...something to lower the testosterone...and it is helping with the hair growth on my face. I have since started the South Beach Diet and have lost 29 lbs to date...with only another 100 to go.
Anyway, I am so so so thankful for this forum because I finally see that I am not alone. No one I know has this and therfore, no one to talk to about it...thank you all for helping me learn more and being here. I don't feel so hopeless anymore.
Hi Jilly, and welcome to SC! I felt just like you did when I found this board in July. I was diagnosed in 1983, and I went all these years thinking there was nothing that could be done. I ended up with diabetes, high blood pressure, fibroids, breast cancer, and years of obesity.
I just want to comment about something you said:

It's actually the other way around. Insulin Resistance is now known to be the force behind PCOS. Until a few years ago, it was thought to be an ovarian problem, but now it seems that insulin resistance is what makes our other hormones go haywire.
You will find so much information and support on this board. I suggest you go over to the research/articles forum and read, read, read, especially the sticky info, for starters.
Cya around the boards
Linda

I was told by my Dr. that pcos caused it...and Ihave read on the internet both ways. Thanks for the update and I will definitely inform my dr. And thanks for the article info...I will definitely check that out.
