Default Yet another clomid question....

I'm sure you ladies are sick of these questions but I didn't see this in the threads I browsed. (maybe i just over looked it)
When you are taking clomid, do you have to be monitored by the doc? Do you chart your temp to check if you ovulate? I know some women talk about ultrasound and what not. What is the general procedure? My ob is about an hour and a half away. I see him every few months but I never discussed clomid with him. He knows we would like to try...I think maybe he's waiting for me to tell him I want drugs? Actually we are trying, but I really doubt it's gonna get us anywhere. TIA for your help!
Sara

Hi Sara - Some women are monitored while on Clomid by getting labs and u/s'd done (to check on the follies) while others do not get monitored. I did clomid 2 rounds. First round bust - Second round considered a bust until I majically O'd on CD33. WAAY late, but would have NEVER had known if not for labs. I have never charted temp's. You have to be super diligent at doing it first thing e/morning before your feet hit the floor. I am NOT that diligent. Maybe you can try a round of clomid un-monitored and see what happens. If you get any ovary twinges that is a good sign, EWCM is a good sign too. Then if you find out that round didn't result in a BFP then maybe you would want to do a monitored cycle. I know you said your Dr was 1 1/2 hrs away and that is REALLY far but what ever you decide I will say Clomid made my body O and therefore got AF on my own in forever!! Besides the s/e's I think it is a great fertility drug. BEST OF LUCK!

Hey Sara! I hope I can answer some of your questions, but I think you'll see that different docs monitor in different ways. I'm taking 50mg Clomid, and the doctor does a progesterone test on day 24 to see if I've O'd. I don't go to her office. I just get the level over the phone, and I know that if it's over 10, I'm in good shape. My doc won't do an u/s, because she doesn't think it's necessary. I wish she would, but no luck. I temp daily, because it helps me predict what's going to happen, and I'm definitely a planner! It gives you a good idea of exactly when you O. I've been very anal about this whole thing, so that's why I do it. I've never been able to get OPK's to work for me, so I gave up on that. I'd recommend the progesterone test, because that way you know if it's working, and how well it's working ( a higher number indicates a stronger O). I'd also recommend the temping. I'm not sure about u/s, but I think people do it so they can figure out the size of their follicles and the quality of their eggs. It may be another step though - I'm not sure how many people start off with that kind of monitoring... Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Check out the ttc board too! There's lots of good info there!

This is how I was monitored, by labs and u/s. I took clomid cd5-9 and started getting vaginal u/s on cd12 to check for follicle development. My first round of 50 mg of clomid was a bust bc no follie developed. The second round of 100 mg of clomid resulted in DS! Oh, I was on 1500 mg of met and took an hcg trigger when the follie was big enough, too. HTH.

I'm on my 3rd round and wasn't monitored the first 2. I was told to take the clomid on days 3-7, then start the OPK around day 14 and then that was it. No O that month. Second month, same instructions. I didn't think I O'd but I got AF on CD45, so I must have, but I had long abandoned the OPKs by then!

This time, he told me to come in when my test showed I O'd... I went in on CD 21 and had an ultrasound...but it didn't look like I O'd. So now I'm on CD35...

So there are varying degrees of monitoring. My friend on Clomid went in almost every day at a certain point to have her blood tested--very hands-on!

I think it really depends on the Dr and whether you are seeing an OB or a RE. I am only seeing my ob now and I am on my second round of clomid.
He does a manual exam once a month to check for cysts and I temp.

He said it I need anything more evasive I will have to see an RE. I have been temping but if I don't get bfp this month, I think I will invest in a CBEFM.

Good Luck

My RE put me into cycle monitoring while on CLomid. I am only on 50mg to start (days 5-9) but I have to go in for a CD3, 10 and subsequent u/s and b/w. When on clomid there is a chance of developing cysts. So the u/s is to determine if you have a cyst of if you are overproducing follicles. My RE won't continue a cycle if you produce more than 3 mature follicles or if you develop a cyst.

Thanks ladies! I had an induced AF this month so I don't think I'll ask about it for this cycle, but I'll check into it for next time. I almost called my OB this morning but I'm afraid of being told no lol so I didn't call. I guess if he said no then I just wait until I go see him again. I can always hold out that I'll O this month on my own. I started temping again this cycle so I'll keep doing it until I go to the ob again. He really seems like he's willing to do whatever it takes so lets hope he's on my side in all of this.

Good luck to you ladies on clomid now!! And everyone TTC!!
Sara
