Hi everyone! I'm Renee and I'm from IL. I was diagnosed way back in 1996 after ttc. After that my weight increased (I used to be 160 - 170 and I'm now 237! UGH!) and I went on an assortment of fertility medication which didn't help the weight any. Long story short, I finally conceived - twin boys! - but miscarried at 16 weeks. I did another round of fertility - IVF this time - but the sperm and eggs decided they didn't want to play nice, and avoided on another like the plague. (Which I thought was strange since A. I'd gotten pregnant via IU before, and B. I thought they injected the sperm into the egg. But...that doesn't matter any more since it didn't work.) Now some 10 years later I'm about to turn 40, my outlook on my life stinks, and I'm heavier than I've ever been. I was looking for information on diets and such and came across this board and was THRILLED to see I wasn't alone. YAY! I've spent a good portion of the afternoon reading everyone's posts and learning a lot. I thank you all for putting yourselves out there and helping others. I hope to do the same in the future.
My question...I'm not on ANY medication for my PCOS symptoms. I was on Metformin but got really sick and stopped taking it. After my miscarriage my periods seemed to regulate themselves. Now they're not to the day, but they're darn close, and in all that time I've only missed a period maybe a handful of times. I've still got the weight, and don't get me started on the facial hair. But I was wondering...does PCOS just go away? I understand that I could have higher levels of testosterone and that could be causing the facial hair...but is it still PCOS? I haven't been tested for it since I started doing the fertility stuff. (That's when I was first diagnosed.)
Anyone else have anything like this??? Thanks for your time, and for reading this. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Smile, even though you might not feel like it.
As far as other meds besides Met. There is Fortamet, Met XR (both have been known to cause less to minimal side effects unlike regular met) that is also used to treat PCOS. I've also heard of Avandia. If you have elevated testosterone levels you can take Aldactone. Hope this helps.

In search of FACE TIME with NKOTB on their FULL SERVICE summer tour 2009!!! See ya in Jones Beach, NY, Detroit, MI, Cinci, OH, & lastly partying like theres no tomorrow in Houston for the last show of the tour! I LOVE NKOTB!
I pray everynight that I will wake up from the PCOS nightmare, but it hasnt gone away! So when I wake up in the morning I tell PCOS to kiss where the sun doesnt shine!
I think there are ways to mitigate the ugly symptoms though, good luck! We have to read the info that Kat Karney suggested to customize what will work for us, no PCOS sufferer is created equally...
Welcome to SC! I'm not sure if PCOS ever goes away. I was treated for a year on Yasmin (BC), Flutamide (anti-androgen), and Metformin (still taking) and it seems like all my levels are normal now, even though my weight is still high. My periods seem to be regulated as well..I haven't missed in a long time. However, I am still having fertility issues and after trying for over a year, have not been able to conceive..so I'm not sure how to answer your question, I guess. I hope being here helps and we can support you and lift you up (if you get down). Everyone here is amazingly positive and helpful! I've learned a lot!

Yeah, the facial hair is part of it for some of us, unfortunately . . . I have it, and I know it's due to the high level of testosterone I have. I'm hoping to get on medication of some kind soon . . . I hope it brings down the male hormone level. Thankfully I have a wonderful fiance who thinks I'm beautiful just the way I am . . . I get facial waxes though-- they're good if you can afford them, you just have to go to a spa where they can do it gently enough or you can break out from it.
