Yikes... a little help for a confused PCOS teen please!
Hey everyone.
I found this website and I was so relieved, because there are so many other females out there facing these same issues and I don't feel like I'm alone. I'm 17 years old, which is hard enough as it is, and I have to deal with this confusing condition too... and I am DEFINITELY CONFUSED. I was diagnosed with PCOS sometime in the early spring because of irregular periods and insulen resistance. The only other person who I know personally with it, is my second cousin. I've been somewhat overweight my whole life, but over the past 2 years or so, I gained a dramatic amount of weight and soon I stopped getting my period all together. I was put on birth control, and taken off of it because my dear mother has a fear of me being on any medicine. Then, early in the summer, I was put on somewhat low doses of Glucophage. I was on it for about 3 weeks until I became very sick one day and (due more to my mother, not the doctor) I was taken off of it. I'm positive it had nothing to do with the Metformin. Now I'm back on it, 2000mg, and I have been for the past 2 weeks. The side affects have been mild diarhea and drowsiness. I also have been doing my best to eat a low-carb diet (very hard, by the way!) and excercise. I got a very short short period last week, which is good. However, I've been so fatigued lately that its tough to jump on the treadmill. I thought exercising more would increase my energy, but it hasn't. Is this a side-affect of PCOS, or could it do with the medicine? It all seems to tie together somehow. Are there ways of increasing my energy? I'm already time-crunched and busy as it is, but its tough to get anything done when I can barely concentrate and I just want to go and take a nap! If any of you lovely ladies could help me out and know a lot about teenage PCOS, I would appreciate it!
i am sorry your mother is interfering with your health care.. it sounds like your doc putting you on metformin is doing the absolutely right thing ( i do think though that NOT being on birth control is good so you can get accurate blood test readings)
fatigue..i wish i could help. aside from eating less carbs... it may just take time to feel better when your hormones level out. have they tested your thyroid?? www.thryoid.about.com is a good site to realllly read about that. also my suggestion is to always get copies of your blood work and when in doubt..post the results here so we can help.
as far as your mom goes.... she sounds like she cares..but doesnt "get it". please be strong and keep up with pcos treatments..
welcome to soulcysters xo jenn

Welcome! I too have lots of fatique, and exercising just makes me more tired. I love my modified low-carb diet, which isn't as hard for me. I hope you get things straightened out with your meds and your Mom
