Hi Ladies,
I was just wondering if anyone had a fear of gaining weight since they were diagnosed with PCOS? Ever since I was diagnosed I have this fear of becoming insulin resistant (if it's possible to suddenly become it??) and it kind of gets to me sometimes. My doctor says I don't need to be tested for IR because I am thin, but I'm still worried about rapidly gaining weight like so many women with PCOS do.
Andrea

Besides the 5 pounds or so that I tend to gain and lose, I'm not particularly worried about gaining any weight. I think there are people with PCOS who seem to be more predisposed to gaining weight, but I live a healthy life and eat well and exercise, so I just can't imagine that changing and me gaining a ton of weight. I supposed I could be wrong about it, but I don't think I am.

Yes, I was originally. When I got the diagnosis I was so scared I was basically going to turn into a big, fat hairy, bald man!!! (I hope I'm not offending anyone... its just the list of symptoms seemed so daunting!!) I actually do think I AM IR (although never actually been tested, but met has worked wonderfully for me and I think I have the AN... those dark patches on my elbows) but so far, weight hasn't crept up on me, so I think as long as I try to stay active and watch what I eat a bit that I don't think it'll be a problem. I mean, I'm on my third baby and its been 5.5 years so if I were going to gain weight I'd think I would by now, right?
Oh, and I think that just because you're thin doesn't mean you can't be/have IR, so if that's the criteria your doctor's using, I'm not sure that's the best.

I was thinking the same thing but I wasn't sure. I guess I just fear that my youth is the only thing keeping me thin and one of these days I'm just going to start gaining rapid weight. I guess I'll just watch what I eat and try to be really healthy when/if I get pregnant. Thanks for replying to the post though! It was really helpful. Maybe I'll just demand an IR test from my doctor.

I was worried, but then I thought about it and realized, I've had to have had this problem for a long time. My periods were never regular without BCPs. I am 32 now, so if I were going to have gained weight as a result of this, it probably would have happened by now. Now I just have to worry about middle age spread like everyone else! I think that it's possible to have enough insulin resistance to screw up your hormones and affect ovulation, but not enough to be causing all the other problems, including weight gain.

I have the same fears you do. I am thin and IR. People say, "you're young, you don't have to worry about that." I always respond that now is the time for me to worry about it.

When I was 20 I was very thin too. It hasn't been until 2 babies later and the late 20's that the weight start sticking. I'm not overweight by any means, but I think any weight gain I've gained has been aging, not PCOS.

I used to worry about this too. I was diagnosed 5 years ago, but probably have had it for more like 8 years. I have never had a weight problem, though I did notice that when I hit 30 I could no longer eat anything I wanted in any quantities. I put on about 7 pounds in the last year, but now that I'm diligent about exercising and eating at home more instead of out it all came off pretty easily, so I don't think I'm on the road to obesity, just normal aging metabolism. I still do worry, though. And I'm constantly checking my chin for hairs! My dr said that if I'm not having hair growth/easy weight gain at this point I probably am not that "kind" of PCOS.

I definitely worry. I'm thin now, but some women on here have told stories about how they used to be so thin and then they just exploded. I read a post the other day of a woman who used to be a model and gained something like 80 lbs in a year.
Needless to say, I do not want that to be me.

That's exactly what I'm scared of!!!! 80 pounds in a year! That's crazy!
Thanks for all the responses ladies! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one out there with this silly fear. I guess I'll just keep trying to eat healthy and exercise for the time being!

I'm insulin resistant, too. My doctor didn't think to check because I am not overweight. Um, shouldn't these doctors know more than we do? why does that never seem to be the case with this disorder?
I am worried about what pregnancy will do to my body - and that I may have a difficult time shedding the baby weight because of my hormonal issues and IR. But I have maintained this weight without much effort for years now, so I'm hoping my body will remember its usual point on the scale a few months post-baby.
