"Obese women, particularly white obese women, are less likely than their thinner peers to be screened for breast and cervical cancers, researchers reported Monday." (see link for remainder of story)
I know this is true for me. I went for years without going for my pap. I guess there are several reasons why.
1. I'm embarrassed I haven't lost weight or have even gained weight
2. Dread being weighed
3. Dread the "weight" talk when I really need to be discussing my female problems (though I realize there may be a correlation)
4. Hate sitting in waiting room
I'm sure there are other reasons. What about you? Do you get screened regularly for breast and cervical cancer? If not, why?
As much as I hate it myself, I do bite the bullet and go. Sometimes self-preservation is far more important than self-image. Put away the negative self-image and love your body enough to be screened regularly.
I get screened every year, pretty faithfully. Partly because my GYN also treats my PCOS, he sees me a million times a year for everything and he makes sure to get my annual exams scheduled!
I don't really like the scale or the overall embarrassment, or the pain, but to me it's worth it. My parents did a pretty good job of drilling into my brain the notion of keeping everything in check (I see the dentist every 6 months still, too, even when most of my friends have stopped).
I also have a pretty bad medical phobia, so I make it sound easier than it really is!

I also go every year, once to my GP for general physical, once to my GYN for a physical there, too, and then other assorted doctors for whatever has ailed me during that year. Once for the eye doctor, a couple of times for the dentist, etc.
My boyfriend thinks I go to too many doctors!

I was screened every year from 15 until 18, and then I lost insurance coverage. The first thing I did once I got insurance was schedule a physical. I was lucky enough to have a doctor that was familiar with PCOS. I went in with all of these issues (weight gain, sudden drops in blood sugar, masculine hair growth) I never thought that they were related....I had a diagnosis by the end of the month. Ever since then I go in once a year faithfully.
