This is an article in today's Bella which I thought you might like to see so am typing it in so you can read it for yourselves. It frightened me a little bit as my mother had a heart attack last year.
ARE YOU A WALKING TIME BOMB?
Are you tired all the time, craving coffee, sweet and starchy foods to give yourself a boost? Do you tend to put weight around your middle and find it hard to shift? If so, you could be among the one in five who have what doctors have tagged "Syndrome X" a ore-diabetic condition where the body fails to use sugar (glucose) properly. If untreated, it could only be a matter of time before you suffer a heart attack.
HEART RISK
Syndrome X is associated not only with diabetes but also with a cluster of other health problems that put your heart at risk. It's also been linked with polycystic ovary syndrome which can cause difficulties conceiving.
HOW TO BEAT IT
* Avoid foods that release glucose into blood too quickly like sugar, white rice and cornflakes. These foods are said to have a high GI (Glycamic Index). Recent research has suggested that foods once thought to help stabilise blood glucose levels, like jacket potatoes and brown rice, may actually do the opposite.
* Replace high GI foods wiht those classed as low or medium GI like bananas, wholegrain pasta, apples and lentils.
* Avoid caffine, which raises blood sugar.
* Exercise regularly to help the body burn blood sugar more efficiently.
MORE INFORMATION
To find out the GI of various foods read The GI Revolution by Jenny Brand Miller and Kay Foster-Powell (£10 Hodder Mobius)

Thanks for this Helen - I can't believe that we are only just starting to see this type of article in women's mags. You'd think that with the plethora of slimming mags on the stands, at least one of them might mention the Glycaemic Index! Here's hoping it is the first of many articles to come!
