Hi everyone, My name is stephanie and im only 17 years old. I went to my doctors on thursday and sat down with him and told him all the things that were wrong with me, I have darkened skin around my neck, under my arms and even on my ankles. I told him i had alot of hair growing around my chin and my upper lip and also told him i have hair on my lower back. I am overweight. I have not had my period yet. When i told him this he immediately mentioned PCOS. I went for bloodwork on friday and got a number of things tested and my ultrasound is on monday at noon. These problems occured in me around the age of 13 or 14 when i probably began my puberty cycle and my period, by i'm guessing I had PCOS all along? is this possible? even at a young age can you be diagnosed with something like this? I'm so scared still a young adult just wanna have fun and this happens.
Sorry to hear your news Steph, it is very possible, and although I was only diagnosed a year ago I have had the symptoms since I was 12/13 after I got my period.
On the positive side PCOS is more of a condition than an illness and can be managed, in my experience. There are lifestyle changes you can make that may alleviate some of the syptoms, in no way should it ruin your life.
Have a look through this site, the ladies really know what they're talking about, and go and see what your doctor can do for you.
Feel free to ask any questions and good luck!

I have been looking around the site reading everything about PCOS, I'm just processing it all now..i'm sure ill know more about things to do how to do deal with it. I'm just curious, i know the types of pills they give you t ohelp, i know what meteformin is from helping my grandma do her pills cause she has diabetes, but with the pills they give you..do you have to take them for the rest of your life?
I don't think so, but i am no expert. The impression my dr gave me is that I am taking these pills in a bid to lose enough weight for the PCOS not to be a problem in my life. Then I guess I would come off them, I suppose it would depend on of the weight went back on. There is also some debate about whether you stay on them when pg, but that needn't worry you yet!

Yes, it's definitely possible--I was 19 when my doctor first mentioned it and I had been having symptoms for about 10 years, ever since I started puberty (I started early). My periods had never been regular, and then when I was about 11 or 12 I suddenly gained 50 pounds in just a few months with no explanation. Now I realize it was probably the PCOS kicking in. All teenagers have acne, but I always had it worse than anyone else and still do. The symptoms just kept getting worse as I got older. I'm glad that you got diagnosed early. Things do get better once you get treatment. I'm on the pill and it helped a lot of things. I've also been experimenting with herbals recently. I hate the idea of taking a lot of prescriptions.
oh sweetie..I am sorry that you are scared and that you have PCOS..in a way you are 'lucky' that you know already...I was almost 29 when I was diagnosed..all those years I could have been treating this thing called PCOS...
good luck! you found the best place for support....

Ok, well it is not the end of the world. I too am young and it has not affected me. If it was your ovaries and there were white bubbles on them, those may be cysts. Dont get to excited tho. We are not doctors and who are we to decide how to read an ultrasound...they are impossible. Just roll with it as it comes. Good luck to you and happy trails!!!
