So I usually go to the Family Planning clinic for my scripts, recently they have been encouraging me to go to my GP but why should I when I have to pay astronomical fees there and its free at the clinic. When I went to get a new script today they turned me away!
what's worse is that they claim I don't have PCOS, I was diagnosed about 10yrs ago and then about 4 yrs ago I had another ultrasound confirming the diagnosis, it's all because recently I had a blood test done and it came out relatively normal. So now I have to go 2 my GP, thankfully she has appointments left before my pills run out. I'm thinking of asking for a re-referral to the specialist I saw when I was first diagnosed - any thoughts?
Even worse they will hand out pills for contraception but not for those with medical problems is essentially the message I got!

I wish I had more helpful advice for you, but it seems like that's just the way it is. I mean, it is the *Family Planning* clinic, so it's rather obvious that they mean to hand out contraception for "family planning" purposes and not necessarily medical problems.
Honestly, if they're going to give you grief about whether you have PCOS or not, it might be worth it just to see your GP anyway. Depending on what kind of prescription you have, it shouldn't cost that much otherwise.

Yeah, I get that but I went to them since the beginning because they were supposed to be experts (more than a GP) in the area of reproductive health. After 10yrs they suddenly are saying no is what ticks me off, it was like a slap in the face to say go away.
I fully plan to use my GP from now on since they wont, and I had planned to see her if the crap continued and now they just made me switch earlier

I am just now seeing this, but I would call the state department and complain and talk to someone about it.
But yes, please do consider going to the GP about this or finding a GYNO

Yeah I went to my GP and she had no problem in writing me out a new script, but now they have sown seeds of doubt over the way we have been managing my PCOS and I'm kind of nervous to ask for a referral to the specialist which would be in another 6 months when I go back for a new script.
Thanks for the support Navi & Amanda

I live in England and I've found that they are reluctant here to offer anything but a minimum of care unless you ask for exactly what you need. Healthcare here is 'free' (paid for by tax money not when you use it) and they seem to think that offering only a bare minimum is a good way to save money. I suspect your family planning clinic works on much the same principle. Ask for a referral and be prepared to write to anyone who can help if you are refused.
Sorry Erika, I knew that I have no idea why I wrote amanda (duh). Thanks guys I just have to work up the nerve to ask my GP, I find it really hard to 'throw my weight around' I get really nervous and shy and then chicken out.
Hopefully 6 months and I'll have worked up enough courage, I think it was the whole complete acceptance with no problems by my GP when I expected her to think about it that had me a little off balance and discouraged me from seeking the referral.

You don't need to throw your weight around to get what you want. I've found that if you can get people to believe they are helping you, and even better that it's their idea, then they are very likely to give you what you need.
Ask a few polite questions and say "I thought" or "Is it possible?" and you'll often win without any stress at all. Be informed but not demanding and be willing to listen to alternatives if they're offered before you gently but firmly insist you want what you've requested.
Don't go in expecting the worst, you aren't asking for anything you shouldn't have.
Don't give in, you know yourself and you know what you need better than anyone.
And don't get stressed, just be calm, polite, and insistent.
Hey thanks corvidae, that sounds like a really good approach. Will remember that one next time!

Thats really not fair on you... it doesn't make sense, the system is just so stupid! i think you should go to your gp, and get them to reffer you, that was the best thing i did... and my medication only works out really cheap for a month... but i think its idiculous that they accused you of not really having pcos when you have two diagnoses behind you....

Caitriona, thanks so much for your support, my pills are also cheap but its the doctors bills which are crippling! With no job, and full fees ahead of me (after my birthday in June I'm not eligible for the free appoint's anyway) its going to be a struggle.
I fall through a gap in the benefit system a part time student can't get any money from social welfare their only choice is to get a job, but despite numerous applications to many different jobs it's not going anywhere
I still have a few months yet ahead of me before I go back for a new script, so hopefully it will all work out in the end!
